Storyline: The Prophecy
Date: July 16, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Bryan J.L. Glass
Artist: Michael Avon Oeming
Synopsis: The sacred Readers of the Wheat declare final judgment on Karic’s life and his validity to fulfill the Prophecy within the heart of the Great Ash Tree. While Templar rivals Pilot and Cassius each face the ancient vengeance of bats. And Rat Captain Tosk’s slave train arrives at the capital city of the mice at last, Dealrach Ard-Vale–the Shining City–where rats, mice & weasels live together in peace… all under the cold and baleful gaze of King Icarus and his court.
Opinion: In a fresh new take on fantasy Glass and Oeming have recreated our own animal kingdom into a universe all its own. This story is familiar digging its roots into the archetypal foundation that has provided support for great literature throughout the centuries, yet at the same time weaving a new tale to expand our imaginations and stimulate our creativity. Glass and Oeming have used natural elements that to our eyes are mundane and old and shown us that through another’s eyes they can be magical and wondrous. From using the moon to be the eye of a god to using a wheat field as a way to predict events they have invited us to change our perspective and let our childhood imagination run wild. Storyline: The Walking Dead #50
Date: June 25, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Charlie Adlard, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooton
Synopsis: The five-oh. It’s been a long time coming, but Kirkman has made it to issue 50 with the little zombie book that could. In this issue we follow Carl, left slightly alone since last issue. Read catch up, because I’m not spoiling it for anyone who waits for the trades.
Anyway this issue sees Carl dealing with the ramifications of last issue, as well as coming into his own as a character. It’s been a long time coming. In all honesty, I’ve never cared for Carl until this issue. He’s always seemed like a pain in the ass background character with a cowboy hat. Not anymore. Not at all.
Opinion: I want to let it be known that I love zombies. Anything to do with zombies I tend to read, absorb and spit back out in a morphed form in a story. The Walking Dead is perhaps the only good zombie story currently being printed and it deserves all the praise it’s fan base gives it.
Kirkman has a way of portraying the zombies as a background character and bring humans to the surface. You don’t see this too often in stories following the ambulatory deceased. Normally it’s the same old crap over and over again. Dead rise, eat the living and all we get to see is some action story without any heart.

Storyline: Not Specified
Date: June 18th, 2008
Price: $3.50 US
Writer: Jay Faerber
Artists: Jon Sommariva and Fcolor
Synopsis: Gemini is one of The Constellation’s top super-operatives. So why have they sent another one of their operatives, the Lynx, after him?
Opinion: Just like its predecessor Gemini 2 is just as much as a thrill ride as the first. The surprise ending of the last comic is quickly resolved and a new plot twist develops just as quickly. This comic keeps you enthralled! The art is unique (at least to me, a noob) and very apropos to this comic. The character development of all involved is well done, including the new people who are introduced this issue.
The uniqueness of this comic is the fact the the superhero is not aware of his alternate identity, nor is his “normal” alter ego away of the superhero. This makes for a very interesting story where a group of people run our hero’s life both the benign and the superhero. Of course the new girl to this group of people has screwed up which caused a big shock in the last issue. Now to rectify the situation they must send out reinforcements to bring the superhero home without him finding out about his normal alter ego.
I know I’ve already spoiled some of the story, read on to find out the rest…

Story Line: Eternity
Date: June 11th 2008
Price: $3.50
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Ryan Bodenheim
Synopsis: From the mind of comic book innovator JONATHAN HICKMAN and pen of super-talent and Image debutant RYAN BODENHEIM comes A RED MASS FOR MARS. In a world that has survived every catastrophe imaginable, a new threat from beyond stars looks to be the end of all humanity.
A RED MASS FOR MARS is a story about the death of utopia, the last days of Earth and the one man who could save us all - but won’t.
Opinion: Adding another interesting book from the unique mind of Jonathan Hickman to Image Comics’ excellent job of publishing awesome stuff lately, A Red Mass For Mars proves itself so far to be quite an original mini series. This book, introducing (as far as I know) a new timelines, new characters, new situations and new concepts seems a bit thin for the included content. It doesn’t feel as fleshed out as it could be for the weight of the story. Nevertheless, it’s quite compelling, and the read was enjoyable.

Storyline: Spellbound
Date: May 29th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Joseph Michael Linsner and Eva Hopkins
Artist: Joseph Michael Linsner
Synopsis: Ivory gets in over her head as she explores the underbelly of New York City nightclub life: the secret world of the bloodsuckers. Hidden doors are suddenly opened, and clandestine societies are revealed. Ivory’s new “friends” are out to show her that blood really is thicker than water…
Opinion: Alright, I’ll admit it - after the bliss of delving back into Linsner’s imagination and artwork - the hypnosis has worn off a bit and the luster is fading already in issue number two of Joseph Michael Linsner and Eva Hopkins’ Dark Ivory mini series. What started as a somewhat interesting story, covering a fairly worn out topic has turned typical and mundane for me. It wasn’t all bad, though - there were some parts that were enjoyable, I’m not trying to be a negative nelly here and I for sure will be sticking the stoiry out. Sometimes a mini series hits a hiccup towards the middle, and I’m a loyal reader, if nothing else!

Storyline: All The Best
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Phil Hester
Artist: Andy Kuhn
Synopsis: Back by popular demand, the adventures of Firebreather continue in this all-new monthly title. High school is tough enough for normal kids, but when your Dad is a city-stomping giant monster who expects you to follow in his footsteps it gets even tougher. PHIL HESTER (THE DARKNESS, The Irredeemable Ant-Man) and ANDY KUHN (Blue Beetle, Marvel Team-Up) deliver the high octane action, drama, and humor. For fans of INVINCINBLE and Ultimate Spider-Man.
Opinion: Firebreather #1 is a fun story! The reader follows Duncan, a seemingly normal high schooler right before his 16th birthday. You quickly learn though he is nothing like a normal human teenage boy. He has the strength of a superhero and can breath fire!
The over all story line is fresh and entertaining you can tell the author has a great imagination.

Storyline: Ongoing
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Jason Howard
Synopsis: Wolf-Man’s greatest shame is the fact that he lost control of his powers and accidentally killed a beloved superhero, Sergeant Superior. Now Superior’s teammates, The Actioneers have learned of Wolf-Man’s actions. They’ve come to return the favor.
Opinion: Jason Howard and Robert Kirkman continue to keep the frenzied pace of great stories on a continuous basis with The Astounding Wolf-Man #6. I know when it comes to Kirkman I can be a bit of a fanboy - but this guy has really got his style down and is fast making Image Comics a top contender.
This issue packs a couple big surprises - that’s what I love about Kirkman’s stories. In almost every book, almost every month; there is always a multi-layered story that flows from the foreground to the background, sometimes containing itself in one issue while at other times spanning a few. Astounding Wolf-Man is no different.

Storyline: Unspecified
Date: May 14, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Charlie Adlard
Synopsis: Everything is different now. Any information given here will spoil the story for you. Believe me when I tell you that this issue changes everything.
Opinion: The Walking Dead still packs the biggest punch in comics. I am still reeling after this issue, and I have no idea where Robert Kirkman is going to go from here. The art, as always, delivers and Charlie Adlard continues to put together a coherent and high quality flow in the book.
As with most Kirkman comics, I can’t go into this story without spoiling the story a bit. Please click through the jump to read my full review.
