Storyline: Better Days Part 3 (of 3)
Date: May 14, 2008
Price: $2.99 US

Writer: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews

Artist: Will Conrad

Synopsis: Better Days concludes with a brutal showdown when one of Serenity’s crew is taken captive and tortured. The gang must put their enduring differences aside and work together to save one of their own, even if it may mean losing the cash prize of a lifetime. Joss Whedon returns to his blockbuster hit Serenity, reuniting with Brett Matthews and Will Conrad, his collaborators on the bestselling 2005 series Those Left Behind. Adam Hughes joins the team for covers.

Opinion: At last the final issue of Serenity has arrived. Now I can stop reading and critiquing this horrible comic. Yes, sadly it hasn’t gotten any better now that it’s at the end. The story line is disjointed, the action scenes are impossible to follow and the threat isn’t even explained.

As I explained with Serenity: Better Days #1, I do really enjoy the Firefly episodes and the movie Serenity, but this comic series left much to be desired. My expectations must have been too high since I keep finding issues with this mini.

What do you think? Pretty cool how they made the art come alive like that, did you think the voices matched the characters?

Serenity Better Days #2
Storyline: Better Days Part 2 (of 3)
Date: April 9, 2008
Price: $2.99 US

Writer: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews

Artist: Will Conrad

Synopsis:
The second issue of Serenity: Better Days, follows Mal and his rag-tag crew on a short-lived vacation, where they explore their fantasies and confront long-forgotten enemies.

Opinion: At the end of the last issue the crew had found jackpot, and had become wildly wealthy overnight. This issue focused on their individual dreams of what they would do if they were millionaires. Very nostalgic for someone like me who knows these characters very well but not the best use of a comic book. Comics have limited space, why waste it on dreams and character development when you only have three issues. Let’s have some action!

Serentiy_Better_Days_1
Storyline: Better Days Part 1 (of 3)
Date: March 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews
Artist: Will Conrad

Synopsis: Joss Whedon returns to the world of his blockbuster film Serenity with the three-issue comics series Better Days. Better Days revisits everyone’s favorite space cowboys in this thrilling, action-packed adventure, with Mal and his crew on a heist that promises a big payoff–what’s surprising is that this heist just might make good on that promise.

Opinion: Serenity #1 “Better Days” is supposed to pick up where the show left off and before the movie begins. It’s good to see these characters out in another form of entertainment. If you loved the show and the movie it may be a good fit for you. Even so you must keep this in mind as you read.

The story is choppy at best with no references to the past as well as the future. Without fully knowing the characters and their quirks it is hard to fill in the blanks Joss Whedon leaves out. I love the show and the movie and have watched both multiple times but I had a hard time following where this comic was leading.

You have two pages of the team’s recent run-in with a villain (still yet to be disclosed). Two pages of Inara’s discovery that one of her “clients” is hunting her friends and two pages of a new theft, in short, nothing! The movie and show are action packed in their character development and story development, what felt like a 6 page comic packed with advertisements seems like Joss Whedon’s try at more money in the monopoly he’s created with Serenity. If Whedon doesn’t need the money why is this comic so crappy!
