Wolverine #67
Storyline: Old Man Logan ( Part 2 of 8 )

Date: July 30, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Mark Millar
Artists: Steve McNiven

Synopsis: Logan owes the Hulk Gang. He owes them big, and they’re not the kind to let a debt slide, even for the guy who—50 years ago—called himself Wolverine. So Logan’s agreed to a crazy ride across America with the blind archer, Hawkeye, to deliver a package to the East Coast. First stop: San Francisco…but only if Logan and Hawkeye can make it past—the GHOST RIDERS. MARK MILLAR and STEVE MCNIVEN—the best-selling creative team of the 21st century—continue the biggest Wolverine story the future has ever seen!

Opinion: “Old Man Logan” rolls on through the tail end of summer and Mark Millar brings his vision of Marvel’s future back into harsh focus right from the first page.  We get another glimpse at the new “Amerika” and see the progress of Hawkeye and Wolv…err, Logan as they cruise from Hulkland to The Kingdon of the Kingpin in the Spider-Buggy.  This issue is a solid continuation of the introduction we got last month, with good progression and thought-provoking story elements that fill in the mysterious gaps of this plot.

Marvel 1985 #3
Storyline: The Visitors
Date: July 16th, 2008
Price: $3.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Tommy Lee Edwards

Synopsis: They’re coming for us. The most dangerous villains in the Marvel Universe are here—in our world—and they’re not taking prisoners. The only people who stand between salvation and destruction are 13-year old Toby and his dad, who once was friends with the enigmatic Clyde Wyncham.

Opinion: We have reached the middle of the new series, 1985 and so far it’s been a let down.  Don’t get me wrong the concept is really cool; for those of you who are new to this series the whole idea is that all the comic book characters, good and bad, have descended into this small town to… well we’re not really sure why they’re there yet. Anyway it’s narrated by the older version of the 12 year-old boy who lived though the whole experience. The idea behind the story line is great except the series has yet to amaze.

ComicNerd Review: Marvel 1985 #2

Marvel 1985 #2
Storyline:
Clyde Wyncham
Date: June 25th, 2008
Price: $3.99
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Tommy Lee Edwards

Synopsis: Marvel’s most deadly villains have a foothold in the real world—but who will believe the only person who knows the truth, when that person is a 13-year old kid named Toby who’s read way too many comic books? Fortunately, it seems that Toby has an ally—the Incredible Hulk! Can even the Hulk survive the most titanic throw-down with Juggernaut in comic book history? Find out in this epic clash of super hero action…and ponder—who is Clyde Wyncham?

Opinion: The second edition of 1985 was a little more disappointing than the first. Don’t get me wrong the art was the same style of old comic book and the story line was still very interesting but the issue seemed a little like a filler between major action issues (at least that’s my hope).

Wolverine #66
Storyline: Old Man Logan part 1 of 8
Date: June 18th, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Steve Mcniven

Synopsis: Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of all. For 50 years, no one has heard hide nor hair from him…and in his place stands an old man called Logan. A man concerned only about his family. A man pushed to the brink by the HULK GANG. A man forced to help an old friend—the blind archer, HAWKEYE—to drive three thousand miles to secure his family’s safety. Get ready for the ride of your life, Logan.

Opinion: What an interesting book.  Mark Millar once again weaves an interesting tale, disassembling a character we all know so well and presenting an altogether different person for us to get acquainted with. I’m not always a fan of Millar’s work, a lot of the time I have mixed feelings about his plots, but this one starts off on such a new and different foot, it’s hard not to be enthralled.

Kick-Ass #3
Storyline: Ongoing
Date: June 4th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: John Romita Jr.

Synopsis: Kick-Ass becomes an internet sensation.  His crush hangs out with him cause she thinks he is gay and he meets a new superhero who takes the violence up a notch.  Seriously, it’s some crazy #@!% !

You were wowed by the first two issues of this comic. But wait until you read issue three. Mark Millar (Civil War) and John Romita Jr (World War Hulk) only up the odds here and the pace is breathtaking. I read it weeks ago and I’m still having nightmares. Never have I seen such sickening violence sold to readers in the name of entertainment. If it wasn’t selling so well we’d have to stop publishing this monster. Follow Dave’s journey from zero to hero as he becomes a youtube celebrity. He sure kicked the ass of those drop-outs, didn’t he? Join us this issue where he inspires others to dress up and hurt people.

Opinion: With booby flashes, multiple expletives, and a nine year old girl who eviscerates and decapitates a man Millar has made it clear that this is an adults only party. Please leave the kids at home with the babysitter.

All those of consenting age may continue to the jump for the rest of the review.

Kick Ass 2
Storyline: Ongoing
Date: April 2nd, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: John Romita Jr.

Synopsis: Dave Lizewski wasn’t the class jock or the class geek. He wasn’t the class clown or class genius or class anything…but he was a comic book fan. One day, he put on a superhero costume–and got his ass kicked.

Sickening violence…just the way you like it. The most screwed-up superhero comic of all time continues in what’s sure to be the most exciting launch of 2008. What would happen if you tried to be a super hero? What would happen when an ordinary man in a latex suit comes face-to-face with the criminal underworld? Read about super heroes like you’ve never seen them before and feel happy that you are living here right now when this book is being published. Your grandchildren will only envy you. Comics just don’t get better than this.

Opinion: Dave Lizewski got his ass kicked, but fear not brave reader he is back and this time……. he is in a hospital bed! HIs early battle in issue 1 left him in the hospital with a broken back and two broken legs. After having multiple surgeries and some serious self brooding he is ready for round two. Once again Millar has stuck to his realistic superhero approach….or has he? Jump on down for the rest of the review.

Kick-Ass #1
Storyline: Ongoing
Date: Feb 27, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: John Romita Jr.

Synopsis: From the writer of Civil War and the artist of World War Hulk comes the most screwed up superhero comic of all time. What would happen if you tried to be a superhero? What would happen when an ordinary man in a latex suit comes face to face with the criminal underworld? Read about superheroes like you’ve never seen them before and feel happy that you are living here right now when this book is being published. Your grandchildren will only envy you. Comics just don’t get better than this.

Opinion: “The greatest superhero book of all time is finally here!” says the front cover of KICK-ASS#1, and I am inclined to agree. This title is a fresh start to the superhero mythos and is refreshingly realistic. It is a fun read and made me want to don my boxers over my pants and change the world.

If you are a fan of gritty violence and gratuitous bloodshed then take the jump to the rest of the review.

Marvel 1985
Storyline: Haunted
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $3.99 US

Writer: Mark Miller

Artist: Tommy Lee Edwards

Synopsis: Before SECRET INVASION…before WORLD WAR HULK…before CIVIL WAR… The most powerful super-villains in the Marvel Universe gather their might to wreak havoc on the one place they’ve never before set foot—YOUR WORLD! As mankind’s enemies cut a swath of destruction with unprecedented ferocity and ruthlessness, the fate of the planet rests in the hands of one person: Toby, a 13-year-old boy who holds the key to uniting his comic-book idols, the Marvel Heroes! Superstars Mark Millar (CIVIL WAR, FANTASTIC FOUR) and Tommy Lee Edwards (BULLET POINTS, The Question) deliver a Marvel Event the likes of which you’ve never seen!

Opinion: This new comic is great! Well worth getting into a new series. The idea is fresh, original and the story keeps you interested. Set in 1985 the art does justice to that era of fashion, cars, and everyday American living. The reader is sucked into a story of a major super-hero battle. Only to be thrown into the mundane everyday world of 1985 without so much as an end or explanation of the battle.

Instead, the reader begins to follow the young life of Toby. We are first introduced to him when he is purchasing comics and his knowledge of comics is amazing for a 13-year-old. We learn that he is an only child of divorced parents, lives with his mom and her new swanky husband and is occasionally visited by his biological and broke father. He has a vivid imagination, one only more entertained by his comics, but that imagination is about to become real life.

Read more after the break, SPOILER WARNING!
