Storyline: Heart of Hush: The Last Good Day (Part 2 of 5)

Date: August 6, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Paul Dini
Artists: Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs

Synopsis: A “Batman: R.I.P.” tie-in! Secrets shared years ago between Bruce Wayne and Tommy Elliott begin to have dangerous repercussions in the present. Why is this mystery driving Hush to destroy Batman’s life? And what part does Catwoman play in Hush’s plans?

Opinion: As we saw last time with the first Detective Comics “Batman RIP” tie-in, it’s not really a tie-in at all— it pretty much has nothing to do with “RIP” and can stand alone. But we don’t care, because what’s going on in Detective right now is much better than the main Grant Morrison Batman story anyway, which is confusing the hell out of us.

Once again Paul Dini gives us a great—in fact, even better—story and Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs give us fantastic art. The main villain? Hush, baby! ;D One of my favorites. Click through the jump and read more about this overall awesome issue.

Storyline: Heart of Hush: First Families of Gotham (Part 1 of 5)
Date: July 9, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Paul Dini
Artists: Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs

Synopsis: A “Batman: R.I.P.” issue - and part 1 of the 5-part story “The Return of Hush!”

Readers who were surprised by Catwoman’s return last month haven’t see anything yet as Hush makes a dramatic return to the life of Batman. What will this mean for Bruce Wayne? This epic story kicks off the countdown to DETECTIVE #850!

Opinion: I’m such a big fan of Hush. Batman: Hush is one of my favorite story arcs ever. Jim Lee’s pencils were amazing as always, the coloring was gorgeous, and the writing by Jeph Loeb was superb—leaving no loose plot threads, an admirable feat for a story involving so many characters. (But if anyone could do it, Jeph Loeb could.)

This time around we have the great Paul Dini writing the first Detective Comic tie-in to Batman “RIP”; the art by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs is fantastic, as well. Even though this comic has some weak spots, it makes up for it in many other areas. If you’ve never had any exposure to Hush, then this is a great comic to get you started—and if you’re already a fan like me, you’ll find new gems in this one.

Date: June 4, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Paul Dini

Synopsis: A killer stalks the city, taxing the wits of Batman, the Riddler and every other detective in Gotham. The Dark Knight’s quest to unravel the truth behind the seemingly unrelated murders is complicated by the surprise return of a fan-favorite character. What sinister secret lies at the bottom of the gruesome murders plaguing Gotham City?

Opinion: Wow! This comic is definitely worth your hard-earned cash. The story is interesting and flows well, the dialogue is believable and good, and the art is fantastic. There’s very little to complain about here. Check out my full review after the jump.

Countdown #36

Storyline: Countdown to Final Crisis
Date: August 2007
Price: $2.99 US / $3.65 Canada
Writer: Story by Paul Dini; Script by Sean McKeever
Art: Breakdowns by Keith Giffen; Art by Manuel Garcia; Cover by J.G. Jones

Synopsis: The action ratchets up across five issues in August guest-starring Zatanna, the Teen Titans, the JLA, Poison Ivy, the Penguin, the Atom and more! Karate Kid ventures to Oracle for answers. Jimmy Olsen attempts to join not one but two exclusive clubs. Mary Marvel falls deeper into temptation. And Donna Troy and Jason Todd journey into the Nanoverse! Plus, starting in COUNTDOWN 38, a series of backup stories recounting the origins of DC’s greatest villians, written by Scott Beatty (BATGIRL: YEAR ONE)!

Opinion: Marvel Marvel is naughty and I’m not just talking about that sexy little black number she’s been sporting around in over the past few months. Things get nasty between her and Zatanna and not in a sorority girls pillow-fight sort of way either. I like! In the “Palmerverse” Atom, Jason Todd, Donna Troy and Bob the Monitor fight some magically-powered bugs. Whatever. Poison Ivy has Piper and Trickster on lock-down, with an awesome cameo appearance to boot. A great issue by and large. remeber kids, it’s all building up to FINAL CRISIS so you can have earth shattering revelations in every issue. Sometimes you just got to have magic bugs.
