Storyline: Legacy
Date: June 18th, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Scot Eaton
Synopsis: Xavier traces his history and the history of the X-Men to the core. What he finds will shock you. And what do Rogue, Gambit and Sebastian Shaw have to do with it?
Opinion: Mike Carey is putting on one hell of a show, delving back into the Gambit/Mr. Sinister topic with Xavier being at the center of the story. While the amnesia factor is a bit tired, I can’t help but overlook a lot of stuff simply because Gambit’s back! This story so far has been a lot of fun and the plot revealed in this issue is quite a creative one.

Storyline: Sins of the Father part 2 (of 3)
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Scot Eaton
Synopsis: Sins of the Father, part 2 of 3. Professor X is trying to rebuild memories of his past using other people’s minds. But the past is coming back to haunt him in another way, as a swathe of tragic deaths turns out to be linked by only one factor: Brian Xavier, the Professor’s long-dead father. And solving the mystery means paying a visit to the Hellfire Club…
Opinion: Gambit’s Back!!! Last issue we left off with some assassins sneaking up on ‘ole Chuck and Gambit was revealed on the last page getting the drop on them. It is so awesome seeing the mischievous X-Man back in the book, and not in such a gray area of which side he’s on. I wish more writers would take this character seriously. I’m a bit biased, because my favorite character shows up, but this really is shaping up to be an excellent storyline. Much better than what’s going on in Uncanny X-men, presently.

Date: May 21, 2008
Price: $3.99 US
Writer: Mike Carey, C.B. Cebulski, Duane Swierczynski, and Andy Schmidt
Artist: Brandon Peterson, Scott Eaton, David Lafuente and Frazier Irving
Synopsis: Exploring the fallout of Messiah CompleX, the second part of this collection of short stories follows some of our favorite mutants as they make their way in a world without the X-Men. And only those who adapt will survive. Featuring Beast, Dark Beast, Havok, Vulcan and Surge!
Opinion: Whereas the first part of this two part series gave us a bit of a peek into the fallout of Messiah CompleX amongst some of the fresher faces of the X-Men, this book focuses more on some of the more classic characters. It was enjoyable to see what happened to Forge, a sneak peek into Beast’s state of mind and learning about the current situations of Havok, Illyana Rasputin and Surge and Mirage.

Opinion: I’m a bit biased on this issue, I’ll warn you now! Why is that, you might ask; it’s because of the return of my favorite character! I won’t tell you who it is until after the jump - but it was one of those moments where I flipped to the last page and actually got excited (which rarely happens when I read a comic anymore). That in and of itself made this issue a highlight for me.
With this in mind, I’ll still try to make a fair review, check it out after the jump!

Storyline: War Baby
Date: May 7, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Artists: Ariel Olivetti
Synopsis: Your name is Nathan Summers. You’ve just met a nice Jersey girl. She’s blonde, soft-spoken, and she doesn’t mind the fact that you have a kid…or a bullet in your chest…or a big scary guy with a robot arm that wants to kill you. But you can’t stay here. The future of mutantkind is resting on your shoulders and the longer you stick around, playing house, the bigger the risk. Especially when an old friend comes blasting out of the past…
Opinion: I have not been covering this book like I should have been - it is so very interesting. Strange, but interesting. It’s understandable that every issue seems a bit short, but there’s not much to work with here. It’s just two tough guys and a baby, and Cable’s quandary isn’t very interesting - the one thing driving this whole plot is who the baby is and why Bishop wants her dead.
Everyone has their theories, but no one really knows. I can’t lie; I am holding on to a bit of hope that it ties into the entire storyline where Bishop first met Gambit and thought he was The Witness from his future, the last person to see the X-Men alive and the one who possesses knowledge of who killed the X-Men. An interesting little tidbit: in the Messiah Complex storyline, it was revealed that the Witness was killed by the Marauders in their efforts to destroy anyone with knowledge of the future. I want to believe that entire unresolved issue comes to bear fruit in the recent events in the X-Men universe. But that’s counting on Gambit actually playing an important role in the X-Men, and is probably too much to hope for.

The awesome editing gurus over at Marvel have animated Astonishing X-Men #1 and put together a 10 minute video complete with voice overs and sound effects to celebrate Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s astonishing run and grande finale in Giant Size Astonishing X-Men #1, hitting shelves on May 28th!
Check out the video below to experience Astonishing X-Men like you never have before!
What do you think? Pretty cool how they made the art come alive like that, did you think the voices matched the characters?
The latest in X-Men movie news is a bit disconcerting, and it looks like Marvel and 20th Century Fox are looking into resetting the X-Men movie franchise with a brand new film rebooting the series and picking up on the heroes’ collective history as we see the formation of the X-Men.And who else would be ideal to pilot the tedious and tumultuous waters of teen angst and bitter drama than Josh Schwartz, the creator of Gossip Girl and The O.C.. According to some reports, he has hopped on board to pen the formation of the X-Men and their first days with Professor X.
I don’t know about another origin story. I think everyone can agree that we were all a bit excited to see War Machine bust out in Iron Man, and it stinks we have to wait to see what happens in the sequel + what this Nick Fury cameo could mean down the road. Origin stories are great for comics, but for movies they can be tedious. It could be better to put together a new movie to attempt what Marvel’s trying to do with The Incredible Hulk, and in effect pretend like that horrible crap that was X-Men 3 never happened. It just seems a bit weird that on the heels of Hugh Jackman’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine we’re going to see another origin story wrapped in drama. No thanks!
What do you think? Is it better to reboot the X-Men franchise and have a writer who specializes in dramatic stories come along and breathe new life into the franchise?

Price: $3.99 US
Writer: Mike Carey, Matt Fraction, Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost and Skottie Young
Artist: Brandon Peterson, Jamie Mckelvie, Sana Takeda and Skottie Young
Synopsis: In the wake of Messiah CompleX, there are no X-Men. But where does that leave the mutants that WERE X-Men? Some of the industry’s hottest creators bring you stories of your favorite mutants. Mike Carey (X-MEN, ULTIMATE FF) and Brandon Peterson (ULTIMATE EXTINCTION) bring you a tale of Cannonball and Husk. Matt Fraction (PUNISHER: WAR JOURNAL, IRON FIST) and Jamie McKelvie (Suburban Glamour, Phonogram) tell a story about Nightcrawler. Craig Kyle & Christ Yost (X-FORCE) and Sana Takeda (Drain) take you to Wakanda for a tale of Storm, Black Panther and Neznho. And Skottie Young (NEW X-MEN) writes and draws a story about your favorite New X-Man Anole.
Opinion: Unfortunately, I have not been keeping up at all with a vast majority of the fresh faces that have been showing up in the X-Men books. All of the young mutants who have been having their own little dramas while attending Xavier’s School have held no interest from me, and this book was an excellent introduction to them and a very unique perspective on the current state of the X-Men. I really thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it helped to introduce me to some of the characters I was ignorant of and it gave a frame of reference for the ripple effect of Cyclops and Emma Frost’s reign over the X-men.
