Price: $2.99 US

Writer: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews

Synopsis:
The second issue of Serenity: Better Days, follows Mal and his rag-tag crew on a short-lived vacation, where they explore their fantasies and confront long-forgotten enemies.

Opinion: At the end of the last issue the crew had found jackpot, and had become wildly wealthy overnight. This issue focused on their individual dreams of what they would do if they were millionaires. Very nostalgic for someone like me who knows these characters very well but not the best use of a comic book. Comics have limited space, why waste it on dreams and character development when you only have three issues. Let’s have some action!

Read my full review Of Serenity: Better Days #2 after the jump.

Speaking of action, the few bits of story development found in this issue were choppy and poorly put together: a past memory of dust devils killing friends of Inara’s client, a minor and easy battle at a restaurant, and finally, the captain setting out in search of Inara alone and getting ambushed along the way.

The second issue of Serenity is just as disappointing as the first, however I have a whole new list of complaints! In the last issue a visitor of Inara’s provided some information about the type of people he was tracking and killing. This issue makes a huge leap of faith and ASSUMES the reader will get the point that this visitor of Inara’s is now hunting the rest of the Serenity crew. WTF!

Number 1: How would the visitor link Inara to the Serenity crew and thus the crew to these “dust devils” he was hunting?  Inara’s character, if you know anything about Serenity would not have given that information away to her client.

Number 2: Other parts of this comic allude to the fact that it’s only been a few short days from the last issue, therefore, without Inara’s info, he could not have made that type of connection in such a short amount of time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s Serenity universe, I think that just makes me more critical of what comes out next in this story line. It is a very thin line to walk when writing an original science fiction space cowboy series that does not steal all characters and plot lines from Star Trek, Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica.

Joss Whedon has accomplished that with Serenity and I don’t want to see that ruined by a couple of comics dirtying up the playing field!
