Storyline: Better Days Part 3 (of 3)
Date: May 14, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews
Artist: Will Conrad
Synopsis: Better Days concludes with a brutal showdown when one of Serenity’s crew is taken captive and tortured. The gang must put their enduring differences aside and work together to save one of their own, even if it may mean losing the cash prize of a lifetime. Joss Whedon returns to his blockbuster hit Serenity, reuniting with Brett Matthews and Will Conrad, his collaborators on the bestselling 2005 series Those Left Behind. Adam Hughes joins the team for covers.
Opinion: At last the final issue of Serenity has arrived. Now I can stop reading and critiquing this horrible comic. Yes, sadly it hasn’t gotten any better now that it’s at the end. The story line is disjointed, the action scenes are impossible to follow and the threat isn’t even explained.
As I explained with Serenity: Better Days #1, I do really enjoy the Firefly episodes and the movie Serenity, but this comic series left much to be desired. My expectations must have been too high since I keep finding issues with this mini.

The “bad guy” that captures Mal automatically accepts the crew’s request to meet. The meeting site gets interrupted by new bad guys. Just a suggestion Joss… maybe next time try to explain who this new threat is and why they are fighting you. Mal and the Serenity crew end up fighting side by side with Mal’s kidnapper. Of course they also take the new found gold the serenity crew captured in their last raid.
Mal confronts Inara but he doesn’t try to puzzle out the mystery of how Inara’s client found out about his crew,no!…he’s playing the jealous man and grilling her on her possible dealings with the doctor. Of course he’s just trying to pick a fight, good character development if it hadn’t happened AT THE END OF THE STORY! Other than that there isn’t much of a story so save your money.
The rumors say a new mini series will begin for Serenity about the origins of Shepard Book, I’m anxious to read this new story but unfortunately this time around my expectations will be a bit lower.

1Ouch. I’m a big fan of Firefly/Serenity, the tv series/movie, so that’s disappointing, then, that the comics suck so bad.

2Yep, me too, which made this a bummer to hear about. I haven’t personally had a chance to read it yet but from this - why should I spend the money?
Though considering I like the universe so much, I think I’ll give the Shepard Book mini coming up a shot.
Us fans are forgiving :}

4When I finish reading something and my response is
“THAT’S *IT*? Are you serious?”
it can’t be good. Did Joss just have too many ideas and not enough pages to bother actually telling a story? Is that why he settled to *imply* most of it instead? Was he even involved in this? I can’t imagine why he’d agree to put his name on this trio.
