Storyline: The Joker’s Mild!
Date: July 2, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Arvid Nelson
Artists: Alex Sanchez and cover by Andy Kubert
Synopsis: A cast of top creators lends their talents to THE JOKER’S ASYLUM – a special month-long, weekly series of one-shots starring the greatest villains in Batman’s rogues gallery.
Each issue tells a special stand-alone story that gives readers an inside look into the insane lives of the Dark Knight’s greatest adversaries. And all the stories are narrated by the Asylum’s leading homicidal maniac – The Joker!
Opinion: When I first saw the cover for this book, I got really excited. As a huge Batman fan, I love (well, more like love to hate) the Joker. I was looking forward to a cool Joker story … so did it live up to my expectations?
Find out after the jump, ha ha ha!
Unfortunately, no.
What the &%@#?!
Ahem. Excuse me.
What the hell is this crap? Okay, okay, let’s start with the art. The cover by Andy Kubert is awesome, but sadly the art on the inside just doesn’t match up. It’s, well … different. Which isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, I kind of liked it in a way. Some of the panels were really cool; then again, for the most part, it didn’t fit my tastes. I would have liked to see Andy Kubert do the whole comic, actually, because the cover is cool.
So the comic itself starts off with an introduction by ours truly: the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime. The story is a tale of one of the Joker’s schemes in which he takes over a game show. But do we get acid-squirting flowers? No. We get ginger ale-squirting flowers? What?
This was really lame. Which is disappointing, because this could have been very cool if done right. I guess the writing itself had some good moments, but it was just so anti-climatic. So do yourself a favor and don’t get this. It’s definitely not worth your money.

Were there really ginger ale spewing flowers? That is lame. The thing I always liked about batman was how he and his villans never had powers that were just people. In order for that to work they have to be really sinister and messed up and ginger ale spewing flowers just doesn’t cut it. Thanks for the warning.

LOL, yeah, actually. It makes sense in the context I suppose—but it’s still lame. The Joker didn’t actually cause any damage/real chaos/hurt anyone, he just kind of … proved a moral point? Or taught a lesson, I guess? Which, coming from the Joker, is a highly unsettling concept in itself.

One of the reasons i’ve always liked the Joker as a villain is the ability for good writers to make him waver from mildly off to ragingly insane in the blink of an eye. I have noticed though that it sometimes backfires and all you end up with is weird.

Yeah, me too, Michael. There’s just no telling with the Joker. His schemes only make sense to him alone. He’s just insane. But that’s why he’s cool … and despite how horrible he is, some of the things he says just makes you laugh … (despite how horrible they are, haha, then you feel bad sometimes!)
Love to hate him, like I said.
