Synopsis: In a time of corruption and greed, the only force keeping Gotham City from collapsing into utter chaos included Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent, a cop named Jim Gordon, a vigilante known only as Batman – and a mysterious group of untouchable crimefighters working outside the law. Be here to witness the beginning of a legacy, when a meeting between Gotham’s Finest and Gotham’s Vilest spawn the protectors who will safeguard Gotham’s future, as well as the monster who will try to burn it to the ground.
Don’t miss the start of this exciting 2-part miniseries featuring one of The Dark Knight’s most fearsome foes!
Opinion: A shortened version of the classic Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale Batman story, The Long Halloween, Two-Face Year One #1 (of 2) is great if you’ve never read TLH and fun even if you have.
You might notice there’s a lot missing compared to TLH—but considering that TLH spanned a whole year of comics (thirteen issues), that’s just to be expected. It’s certainly advantageous to have read The Long Halloween, but this comic is very much enjoyable on its own.

So what’s going on in this comic? Well, just like The Long Halloween, this is very much a Harvey Dent/Two-Face origin story. And like in TLH, there’s the Gordon-Dent-Batman triumverate going on. Although it’s essentially a retelling of TLH, this two-part comic is fresh in its own way—putting a spin on the original story—while remaining respectfully reminiscent of The Long Halloween. Not only style and character-wise, but the mystery of the Holiday killer is maintained.
The art is great, and I really enjoyed the flashback sequences. I’ve always loved the fact that Bruce and Harvey go way back and are actually good friends—something I missed in The Dark Knight movie.
Overall, this is pretty good stuff. If you’re already a fan of The Long Halloween, you might like to check this out. If you’ve never read it and want something in a nutshell, this issue is perfect—especially if you enjoyed The Dark Knight, which drew heavily from TLH. But I highly recommend TLH in any case—and this comic’s not bad, either.
