Opinion: Let me preface this critique by saying I have never read any of R.A. Salvatore’s novels. DemonWars is my first dabble with reading his work. The story is interesting and it keeps you reading, the character and story development are quite good considering it is in comic form and he doesn’t have pages of book to elaborate with.

Read my full review after the jump.

One drawback is his use of bizarre names, I realize this helps create a fantasy world and a sci-fi story but in comics it is hard enough to follow the characters and making their name something completely unpronounceable doesn’t help the reader remember that person 3 pages later.

Another drawback is his use of over-used characters from other fantasy/sci-fi books/comics/movies. His depiction of the elves in his comic is ripped right from the pages of JR Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” If one is going to attempt fantasy in the wake of JR Tolkien then it’s got to be 1. original and 2. imaginative and in my opinion R.A. Salvatore’s comic DemonWars is neither.

Overall great artwork and the story moves - but for $5.50 I would expect to find myself caring more for the characters. Perhaps it was actually made for fans of the novels.
