Storyline: The Man Who Bought America part 3
Date: June 25, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Steve Epting
Synopsis: Okay, what the heck is going on here? Is that two guys in Captain America outfits? Yeah, it is.
More than that, we cannot say. The epic Death of Captain America continues in Part Three of “The Man Who Bought America” by the acclaimed team of Brubaker and Epting.
Opinion: As bleak as many view the current status of these United States, things are that much worse as they are portrayed within Captain America. Steve Rogers (the original Cap) has been assassinated, the economy is in shambles and the Red Skull has set up a third party presidential candidate whose numbers soar in the atmosphere of fear and mistrust.
It is under these circumstances that a new Captain America has risen. James (Bucky) Barnes has claimed the mantle from his mentor and now stands against the hordes at the city’s gates. However, Dr. Faustus has set up another heir apparent.

This, dear readers, is a segway issue pure and simple. Don’t get me wrong; Captain America always is one of the month’s best releases, this being no exception. But, while still being better than 90% of what else is out there, is not one of Brubaker’s best.
The simple fact is that nothing really happens aside from setting up number 40. There is little doubt in my mind that issue 40 is going to be great, a culmination of a fight long hinted at. It’s just that i’m impatient and ready for something to finally happen in this longest of long arches.
Perhaps I’m being a little harsh. Certainly, this current run is the greatest we have seen from Cap in decades, if not ever. It’s just that there has been no resolution for, well, years. Captain died nearly 15 issues ago and we are still waiting for something to be done about it. This current act closes with issue 42 and if the cover gives us any indication, we might finally receive a little closure. I just wouldn’t bet on it.
My petty complaints aside, this is certainly a must read. Captain America stands as one of Marvel’s best series and this issue, even with its hints of padding, is not to be missed.

3Hey I think the Cap’ from Avengers: Invaders is the 40’s era Cap, as they are under the impression they’re still in WW2….

4He is, the 70’s cap is the one running around in the savage land with the Avengers in Secret Invasion.
