New Comics for 01/14/09

13 Jan 2009 In: ComicNerd Exclusives, New Comic Day, News

StumpedHello and welcome to our weekly wrap-up! “But it’s Tuesday!” you say? Yes, but everyone knows that the week doesn’t officially start until tomorrow: New Comics Day!

Wow what an oldie but a goodie!  You know I had to bring this weekly column back.  It’s so good to be doing this one again – you have no idea how much this helps me to make sure all the comics I want pulled are actually in my bin and have been released that week.  It also helps me to pick out some other stuff that looks good AND budget for it all!

So – we have some vacancies here as it comes to writers.  I’m going to be a lot more selective this time around with who I choose to write for this site – it’s not fair to you guys if I have someone come, write one or two entries and then leave!  With that said – if you think you can be consistent and you think you’re a decent writer (and you like comics) – shoot me a message and let’s see if you like writing for ComicNerd!

There’s not too much to cover in prior weeks, though – since we’re kind of rebooting ComicNerd in a way and there haven’t been many entries in a while.  Stick it out with us dear readers, it can only get better!

Ok, let’s get started with what’s up…

Click through the jump to get the full rundown of what’s coming in the world of comics this Wednesday on January 14th!

Check out this awesome animation released from Activision’s Raven team – who says in THIS game, Wolverine can run around and hack up anyone, anywhere at anytime.  Maybe they’ll finally make a good video game based on a movie?

Put your mouse pointer on the pic – check it out!

2008 Comic And Graphic Novel Sales Figures

13 Jan 2009 In: News

secret-invasion

Now that 2008 is over, we get to see some of the best and worst of 2008. Diamond Comics Distributors has released their top 10 lists of best selling comic books and graphic novels.

The ever popular Secret Invasion(s) took over the top 10 comic books chart earning a massive 8 of the top 10 positions leaving only two slots open for Uncanny X-Men # 500 from Marvel in 7th place and Final Crisis #1 from DC coming in at 9th place. So overall a record shattering year for the power of Secret Invasion.

DC might have had only one comic hit the top 10 comics list but they made their presence felt on the top 10 graphic novels list, taking 7 out of the 10 bestselling graphic novels of the year. DC also earned the number one spot for their novel, soon to be released movie, Watchmen.

As for the numbers, Marvel grabbed over 45 percent of all comic books and graphic novels that were sold to Direct Market retailers in 2008 and 40 percent of every dollar that retailers spent. DC reported a 31 percent share and 29 percent dollar share, which contradicts their one placement in the top ten comics.

It’s not surprising that Marvel Comics took the lead in both categories but it might surprise some that in 2007 they reported a 44 percent unit share and 40 percent dollar share.

So where did the other margin points go? Well they went to Dark Horse, IDW and to other companies that all got more points in 2008 compared to 2007.  Do you think some of these runner-up company’s may begin to chip away even more at the big guys in 2009?

Hiiiiya!

Hello!  Happy 2009!

While you haven’t seen many new reviews lately, time has instead been spent on getting this new look all polished up – and increasing the site speed (and school :-D ).

Look for many posts every day, and more interactive tools.  It’s easier to post comments now, and the site should be able to handle a lot more.

So play around – take a look at everything and see if it’s faster for you – and in the poll below, let me know what you think about the new design!

Please post and let me know of any problems you run into on the site, I can work on fixing it right away.  There may be a few things I missed that need immediate attention (or just might annoy the hell out of you lol).

Enjoy!
