ComicNerd Review: Robin #177

26 Aug 2008 In: Batman, DC Universe

Storyline: Search for a Hero: (Part 1) The Concrete Cauldron
Date: August 20, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Fabian Nicieza
Artist: Freddie Williams II

Synopsis: Facing some of the toughest criminals and monsters known to man is nothing compared to dealing with your on again/off again, back-from-the-dead girlfriend’s enraged deadbeat dad! A not-so-happy reunion puts Robin between Spoiler and Cluemaster and this time, he’s not so easy to get rid of.

Opinion: It’s the attack of the Robins! Yes, there are THREE in this comic—and the issue is just as crazy as it sounds. Before I move on and just so you know, we were supposed to see Cluemaster (Stephanie Brown’s father) as the villain in this, but because Chuck Dixon got kicked out we get none other than …

Jason Todd (aka Robin II).

Wait, what?

Storyline: -
Date: August 13, 2008
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artists: Leinil Francis Yu and cover by Gabriele Dell’otto

Synopsis: Embrace change. With these two words the Skrull Empire declares their intentions to the entire Marvel Universe. Embrace change. With these two words thousands and thousands of comic fans who have declared Secret Invasion the comic book blockbuster of the summer brace themselves for the shocking changes that are about to happen to their favorite characters and institutions. Embrace change, True Believer, because change is coming!

Opinion: To borrow a line from a recent summer film that you probably haven’t seen, “the night is darkest right before the dawn” and that, my friends, best describes the shape that the Marvel Universe is currently in. Issue after issue, page after page, our heroes have been getting their asses handed to them by the invading pointy eared minions of the Skrull empire.

Meanwhile, the Club of Villains – The Hunchback, Pierrot Lunaire, King Kraken, Charlie Caligula, Scorpiana and El Sombrero – rampage through Gotham City! This incredible fourth chapter of “Batman R.I.P.” ends with the surprising return of a character you never thought!

Opinion: Well, here we go again … Grant Morrison is just as crazy as ever, so let’s try to make sense of this (warning: spoilers!) Zur-En-Arrh pandemonium—right after the jump.

New Comics for 08/20/08

19 Aug 2008 In: ComicNerd Exclusives, New Comic Day

StumpedHello and welcome to our weekly wrap-up! “But it’s Tuesday!” you say? Yes, but everyone knows that the week doesn’t officially start until tomorrow: New Comics Day!

Hello there, long time, no see huh?  Yeah ComicNerd has been getting the stepchild treatment as school & work has demanded more of my time.  Fortunately, I have had some excellent help from our key writers Stephanie and Red Padilla!  They have done an awesome job keeping new stuff up for you guys – This site would be in big trouble without those two.  Be sure to comment on their articles guys!  Conversation is what keeps this site so exciting.  It’s easy, free and you don’t even have to register – so talk to your writers!

Speaking of writers, it looks like I need to recruit some more.  We’re losing some due to time constraints and others due to the same obligations I have.  We’re always looking for more – so if you are interested in writing for the site, please feel free to contact me and let me know what you’re interested in.

Other than that, not too much to cover right now with the downswing everyone has going on.  I promise this will change over time, we’re experiencing growing pains while we have minimal manpower.  It’s actually a pretty common problem with sites this size.  Stick it out with us dear readers, it can only get better!

Ok, let’s get started with what’s up…

Click through the jump to get the full rundown from the last week and a full review of what’s coming in the world of comics this Wednesday on August 20th!

Hulk #5
Storyline: Rolling Thunder
Date: August 6, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Jeph Loeb

Artist: Ed McGuiness

Synopsis: With the entire West Coast in peril, who can stop the battle of the Century when Two, count ‘em TWO Hulks, get to brawling? How about everyone’s favorite Thunder God — THE MIGHTY THOR!? He was out of town during WORLD WAR HULK — THIS is the match-up you’ve been DEMANDING! But can even a God stop the Red Hulk? Find out now!!!

Opinion: Issue 5 of Jeph Loeb’s mysterious Red Hulk storyline smashes into my buy pile!  Who is the Red Hulk!  Find out… next issue.  In this one, we see an epic, or at least would-be epic clash between the mighty Thor and the dangerously cynical Red Hulk.  We get a little more of a hint about who the Red Hulk might be, and definately who he isn’t.  We also get a glimpse of the heavy hitters assembled to smack Red Hulk upside the head next’ish.
