The Astounding Wolf-Man 6
Storyline: Ongoing
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $2.99 US

Writer: Robert Kirkman

Artist: Jason Howard

Synopsis: Wolf-Man’s greatest shame is the fact that he lost control of his powers and accidentally killed a beloved superhero, Sergeant Superior. Now Superior’s teammates, The Actioneers have learned of Wolf-Man’s actions. They’ve come to return the favor.

Opinion: Jason Howard and Robert Kirkman continue to keep the frenzied pace of great stories on a continuous basis with The Astounding Wolf-Man #6. I know when it comes to Kirkman I can be a bit of a fanboy - but this guy has really got his style down and is fast making Image Comics a top contender.

This issue packs a couple big surprises - that’s what I love about Kirkman’s stories. In almost every book, almost every month; there is always a multi-layered story that flows from the foreground to the background, sometimes containing itself in one issue while at other times spanning a few. Astounding Wolf-Man is no different.

Read my full review after the jump.

We see the fallout in Gary’s family as they reach their breaking point in dealing with the monster that Gary has become, and the loss of his company. It’s tragic that our hero cannot get the same support from his family as he has given them, and Chloe, his daughter, turns out to be a snotty rich kid with a short temper. We see some of the same traits in his wife, who is quick to withdraw support from her husband.

Man-Wolf for a husband or father or not, you stick with family, am I right!?

Anyway, we move on into an interesting sequence where Wolf-Man stops a car chase dead, only to find out there is more to the situation than he expected - and we’re introduced to another new minor character who could play a bigger part down the road. From this, Wolf-Man is confronted by the Actioneers - and are they pissed!

Wolf-Man tries to explain himself, but doesn’t get a chance as they pummel him, looking for nothing but revenge. Things are about to spin out of control when a shocking twist erupts on the last page… you’ll have to read to find out!

As always the artwork is highly stylized and fits the content perfectly. There were some points where the art seemed a bit rushed, but you can never be too hard on an artist for that.

The Astounding Wolf-Man is a fun read, and will be playing a big part in other Kirkman titles from what I understand. Take some time and snatch up the upcoming Astounding Wolf-Man TPB that collects issue #1-5 and get in on the fun, it’s worth every penny in my opinion!
