Synopsis: With their backs against the wall, Rick and company are left with little choice but to fight their way out of their prison-come-shelter. With The Governor leading a violent raid set to murder them all, they have no choice but to flee into the throngs of hungry zombies encircling the prison. Unlike other comic book characters, Rick is limited to being simply human, and it is those limitations that sting the most in this issue. Dead and Buried.

Opinion: This is a comic that will be talked about in shops across the country. Kirkman pulls absolutely zero punches and sends this story in an all new direction. We genuinely do not have any clue what is going to happen next, but I know we are all reeling from this one. There is no way to discuss this issue without spoilers, so read more after the jump if you don’t mind being spoiled.

This issue was a big one, and mercilessly put out with as much regard for our take on the characters as the zombies for the flesh they consume. Everyone is dead, it seems - everyone. The only ones left standing that we know of are Rick and his son, Carl, who we see running through the zombies successfully and walking into the wild…alone.

Lori, Rick’s primary motivation outside his son for sticking it out and leading the group has been killed. Not just her, but she and her baby. Shot by one of the Governor’s people, who turn on him and put an end to his life and by doing so, dooming the entire raiding group to consumption by the zombies.

I remember hearing a rumor when I first got into this book that Kirkman intends on keeping this story going for as long as he can. Simply documenting what happens in a world overwrought with zombies and how it affects the characters in his story. If anything, he succeeds in keeping this title from becoming a soap opera or redundant, I can tell you that much.

I can also assure you that every single issue I am enthralled in spite of the brevity his many characters tend to fill the pages. This is a story about the reality of a horrible situation no one can escape from, but only survive in. I plan on sticking it out ’till the end.
