Storyline: Invaders Part 1 (of 12)
Date: May 7th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Jim Krueger and Alex Ross
Artist: Steve Sadowski
Synopsis: The original Invaders (Captain America , Bucky , Human Torch , Toro , and the Sub-Mariner) return in a twelve issue maxi-series by the award winning team behind EARTH X, Justice and Project Superpowers .The greatest super-team of World War II finds themselves transported from the battlefields of the Second World War to a future they never imagined! Now, the Invaders find themselves confronted by two teams of Avengers who want desperately to believe these heroes are who they say they are, while Tony Stark faces his greatest challenge since the Civil War as he must deal with the “return” of Steve Rogers. Confronted by a world they barely recognize, the Invaders will have to show two teams of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes just what kind of power, courage and sheer determination it took to defeat the forces of unrelenting evil in the Twentieth century. In fact…they may just have to do it again in the Twenty-First.
Opinion: Avengers Invaders is the first book of a series dealing with the idea of a time warp. The comic does a great job of detailing the super heroes of World War 2 and their strengths, powers, and quirks. It’s all narrated by one of the human infantry that worked with them in the war. The art in the part of the book is great, showing the battle scenes and the true horror that a war can bring

All of a sudden you are flashed to the future. A future full of campy banter and partially dry humor. Spider Man is in trouble with some other superheroes and is playing out his “devil may care” attitude we all know and love in style. The ensuing battle is all fun and games for Spider Man and the team trying to take him in, until Capitan America and his group walk out of a green smoke cloud.
Sadly to say the story becomes a little hard to follow at this point. One of the team trying to round up Spider Man has a German accent and Capitan America’s team automatically switch into war mode. Not an issue until the battle following this discovery gets out of control. Every comic pane has a new character and their part of the battle portrayed. I understand that the writers are trying to show the chaos that ensues but it’s really hard to follow the next two pages.
I have no previous experience with the Avengers stories so I’m not sure how much of a cliff hanger the ending really is but it seems as if our narrator in the first part of the book is still alive and well in the second “future” part and that he as well as the director of S.H.E.I.L.D. find it very strange and alarming that Capitan America has returned. Pardon the newbie question but didn’t Capitan America die just a short while ago in another comic line?? Just wondering, I’m sure I’ll learn more as I read, I’ll keep you all informed.
Any input from Avengers vets is appreciated!!!

1Yes Steve did die in the Captain America series. I am hoping they don’t use this as an excuse to bring him back from the dead. Also, I am not sure how this fits in with Secret Invasion but Im tired of Marvel not making things one continuity.

2Agreed - I’ll tell you what’s wearing thin - the constant toying with Cap as a plot device. I count three times that his return has been a key point in the story: this title, secret invasion and guardians of the galaxy.
Is there really nothing more exciting to tell your story around?

3I know if he comes back then his death will mean nothing.

4Are you sure it wasn’t Bucky (the “new” Cap) in the suit, and not Steve? ;;shrugs;; That’s really weird.
Heh, how many times have comic book characters come back from the “dead”? But Captain America was different … there was so much controversy over his death. It would be pretty lame if they just were like, “Surprise! He’s not really dead after all.”

6Ok, so I just realized from all your posts how much of a noob I am for reading this whole comic and not freaking out that Capitan America has come back from the past. I do remember my boyfriend making a big deal of his death and I feel like it’s kind of ridiculous that the comics are already trying to bring him back into stories again one way or the other.

7Lol! S’okay, omg_brb (gah, how exactly should I reference you? Hehe.), don’t sweat it.
Hmm, yeah, it is kind of lame. “Technically he’s dead … But we’re going to keep using him anyway.” Wtf?
Ay, comics sometimes.

11I’ve never been into Cap either, but I know he’s a great character so I’d like to read some more issues with him.
Lol, I’m like, the exact opposite right now. Except for the Top Cow stuff I review for GEN, I’m totally into the well-known superhero stuff.
