Captain America #40
Storyline: The Man Who Bought America part 4
Date: July 16th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Steve Epting

Synopsis: It’s Cap versus Cap for the future of the American Dream as the Red Skull looks on in laughter! And Bucky learns the true identity of the man behind the other mask! The epic Death of Captain America continues in Part Four of “The Man Who Bought America” by the acclaimed team of Brubaker and Epting.

Opinion: If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and acts like a duck than it’s probably a duck. Fortunately for us, the man who looks and sounds like the former Steve Rogers is acting nothing like the late Sentinel of Liberty. He’s mean, aggressive and is thoroughly beating the hell out of James (Bucky) Barnes.

The plot continues to thicken following the death of Cap, as the team of villains responsible for the murder have brainwashed a man and introduced him to the world as the new Captain America.

This issue can be boiled down to one hell of a fight, with the two men vying for the title of Captain America slugging it out for 13 of the 22 pages. Brubaker seems to be trying to make up for the recent lack of action all at once with this entry and that’s a good thing. Bucky has had a few run ‘ins with some flunkies but hasn’t faced anyone or worth, until now.

The action is superb, as the brainwashe is stronger, faster and gives Bucky his first real challenge. It’s shield on shield, flag on flag action that sounds a lot cornier via this review than it actually is. D’Armata artistic skill is in full swing here and his ability to draw believable and exciting action is fully utilized within #40.

The whole issue feels like it is moving towards the resolution that readers have so been longing for. You can almost sense the noose tightening around the neck of this arch. It has been ongoing since issue 25 and it’s drawing to a close. The men who murdered Marvel’s main hero are on the verge of FINALLY being punished for their crimes. It’s enough to make a comic nerd giddy.
