Guardians of the Galaxy #2

Writer: Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning
Artist: Paul Pelletier

Synopsis: Groot is here! And so is…hey, wasn’t he sunk in Antarctica? One day on the job, and our cosmic protectors have already made themselves a major new enemy! But how does that connect to Adam Warlock’s mystical past? Could it really be the threat he’s spent years trying to deny? And exactly what or who have the Guardians discovered frozen & adrift in space? It can’t be…can it?

Opinion: The cosmic story of a team of powerful misfits once again provides some good chuckles, fun action, an interesting story and an excellent way of keeping the reader in the loop. The mini-interviews are fun (and informative) and the art is crisp and clear.  Cap’s shield though?  Is that a cheap maneuver or simply good timing?  You decide after the jump.

So the team investigates another cosmic anomaly, and jump in to investigate and see if Adam Warlock can fix this hole in space.  On the floating rock they occupy, they find more than they bargained for when they discover it is made of “Limbo Ice”, which is just a comic-book way of saying the damn thing has been through ‘extra-dimensional voids’.  Haha, geek out on that!

Anyway, encased in this ice are three things of interest.  One is a “gate” of mystery, the other is a historical Guardian of the Galaxy member and finally a giant monster with tentacles!  How can you go wrong with tentacles? (don’t answer that).  So action ensues, the team takes a major hit and what seems to be Captain America saving their collective cosmic butts is not Steve Rogers but rather… well, you’ll have to read now, won’t you?

While not as popular, a lot of writers, big names no less; can learn a lot from this comic.  Into issue 2 and already I have set this sucker on my buy pile, at least until the writers change. I highly recommend this book, even if you’re not a cosmic Marvel fan. It’s just an all around good book and you don’t need to be intimately familiar with the characters to enjoy it *ahem*Batman R.I.P.*ahem*Final Crisis*ahem*.

Good price, good writing, good art and interesting characters any newcomer can dig.  Guardians of the Galaxy should be in your buy pile too.
