Synopsis: From the writer of Civil War and the artist of World War Hulk comes the most screwed up superhero comic of all time. What would happen if you tried to be a superhero? What would happen when an ordinary man in a latex suit comes face to face with the criminal underworld? Read about superheroes like you’ve never seen them before and feel happy that you are living here right now when this book is being published. Your grandchildren will only envy you. Comics just don’t get better than this.

Opinion: “The greatest superhero book of all time is finally here!” says the front cover of KICK-ASS#1, and I am inclined to agree. This title is a fresh start to the superhero mythos and is refreshingly realistic. It is a fun read and made me want to don my boxers over my pants and change the world.

If you are a fan of gritty violence and gratuitous bloodshed then take the jump to the rest of the review.

Mark Millar, the writer of Civil War, once again captures our attention with a compelling and fun title. Millar weaves the tale of wannabe superhero Dave Lizewski as he comes to the conclusion that he can be a real life superhero. The first page gives us a glimpse of things yet to come for our hero and they don’t look good, unless you consider your testicles being electrocuted as good. We then flashback to meet our soon to be hero and he is a normal everyday highschool john.

Millar really comes through in capturing the adolescent years perfectly. He has created a character that feels real and relatable. Soon Lizewski gets a scuba suit and is ready for action and we don’t have to wait long too see him engage his first foes. Equipped with a wooden cluband a strange confidence our hero proceeds to get his ass beat, stabbed, and run over by a car. I personally LOVE that Millar took this direction. He has stuck to the realistic approach and it is very violently entertaining.

As far as the art goes Romita Jr. does not disappoint. He employs a gritty balls-to-the-wall style that makes you feel every punch and cut that the main character experiences. All in all this is a fantastic exploration of the question, “What if I could be a superhero?” If you haven’t picked up this title DO IT!!! or I will kick your ass!…….sorry couldn’t resist.
