Storyline: Ongoing
Date: April 2nd, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Synopsis: Dave Lizewski wasn’t the class jock or the class geek. He wasn’t the class clown or class genius or class anything…but he was a comic book fan. One day, he put on a superhero costume–and got his ass kicked.
Sickening violence…just the way you like it. The most screwed-up superhero comic of all time continues in what’s sure to be the most exciting launch of 2008. What would happen if you tried to be a super hero? What would happen when an ordinary man in a latex suit comes face-to-face with the criminal underworld? Read about super heroes like you’ve never seen them before and feel happy that you are living here right now when this book is being published. Your grandchildren will only envy you. Comics just don’t get better than this.
Opinion: Dave Lizewski got his ass kicked, but fear not brave reader he is back and this time……. he is in a hospital bed! HIs early battle in issue 1 left him in the hospital with a broken back and two broken legs. After having multiple surgeries and some serious self brooding he is ready for round two. Once again Millar has stuck to his realistic superhero approach….or has he? Jump on down for the rest of the review.
Even though the action is limited to the last few pages of this issue, Millar has whipped out another ass kicking good time. (Yes folks, I will be running this pun into the ground throughout these reviews, deal with it) Millar upped the humor in this issue and was very successful. Between the extreme violence and thick teenage angst it was nice to have a moment of Dave worrying about being reincarnated as a spider. Ahh, the things morphine will make you think.
The art was stellar once again and especially delivered in the fight scene at the end of the issue. The overabundance of blood keeps in line with Millars attempt to keep this title realistic.
Wait a minutie!!! Millar dropped the ball of reality in this issue!
As aforementioned Dave suffered from a broken back and two broken legs. He then went through multiple surgeries and a tough battle through rehab. Oh did I mention also having 2 months of therapy. He recovered from this horrible situation in….wait for it…..only 6 MONTHS!!!!!!
Sorry Mr. Millar but this fanboy just ain’t buying it. I work as a Nursing Assistant in a hospital and I know firsthand that this is just not possible. This beating and hit and run would put poor Dave out of of comission for at least 2 years if he even recovers at all. Maybe Millar dropped the ball or just maybe there is more to Dave we don’t know about. One thing is for sure….I will be following this series intently to find out.

1Another well-written review, man.
You’re off to a great start!
Yeah, that is kind of … heh. And if there’s actually more to Dave that meets the eye, then wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of some random guy trying superheroism on for size?
I recently did an early review of a Top Cow comic for GEN called Pilot Season: Twilight Guardian. It kind of had the same idea going, except it was boring; judging by how much people are raving over this comic, I bet it’s much better. I certainly did enjoy the concept—it had a lot of potential. Maybe this will win me over?

2Yeah I think that TopCow series was bad timing - here is the link to Stephanie’s review, btw.

4Thanks Stephanie! I always like when people like my reviews. You should give it a chance. It may win you over or it may not? If nothing it sure is fun to read.

6Twilight Guardian was bad timing? I didn’t think so when I wrote it…around 1995! Kick Ass sounds like a cool book, though, and Mark and I have usually enjoyed each other’s stuff, so I’ll have to check it out! Good work on the review!

7Hey man, thanks for stopping by the site.
I should have clarified the release as bad timing - I wasn’t insinuating Twilight Guardian was unoriginal.
In fact, almost all of the pilot seasons have sold out at my local shop, and I remember seeing Stephanie’s review and trying to find it but it was already gone.

8No, no, I knew what you meant, amigo. The timing thing can be rough, though. I went through the same thing when they released my Common Grounds series (cough cough, the Eisner-nominated tpb of which is available at all fine comic shops). Some folks assumed it was following in the wake of a book called Superhero Happy Hour, which had a similar premise (superpeople eating and talking), until a bunch of folks pointed out that I’d written all the Common Grounds scripts many, many years earlier as my Holey Crullers mini-comics. I really need to stop getting my old stuff republished!
This year’s Pilot Season stuff is just fantastic. I hope they all sell out the wahzoo (and we all know how painful THAT can be).

9LOL! Good point, Troy.
I’m going to have to read Kick Ass so I can make a comparison of the two, since they both have similar basic concepts. Definitely could be an interesting little venture.
… Hmm, and which would get the award for realism? (I guess not Kick Ass #2!
)
I’m sure there would be aspects I would like about both Kick Ass and TG. Twilight Guardian had a lot of subtle humor that was awesome—I just thought it needed a bit more action going on. But realistic? Definitely. For some reason it just made me think, “What would, like, Batman do if Gotham just cleaned itself up?” Because he goes on nightly patrols, too. If that happened, I bet he wouldn’t know what to do with himself.
I guess he would have to settle for his playboy life for good.
And the old comic book splices in Twilight Guardian—the ones the protagonist was reading—were very fun for me. I’m a very nostalgic person.

10I’m currently working on a review for another Pilot Season comic, the one that comes out tomorrow: Lady Pendragon. Hopefully I shall have that up on GEN before tomorrow, but it’s going to be a squeeze getting it up by then. Although thank God GEN runs by Pacific time and not Eastern (the time zone I live in), as that gives me a three hour window, whoohoo!
I’m actually pretty interested in seeing how the Pilot Season thing plays out. It’s a cool but challenging idea.
(Good luck to your comic, Troy!)

21Hey, whatever’s good for you Stephanie, I’ll tell you though - you guys are blowing up the comments lol - much more than I ever expected. Thank you so much.
BTW Stephanie - are you gonna get to sneak in a reference to the Ghost Rider contest at GEN… or do you think the pure awesomeness of the contest will make heads explode? Yeah, I’d be worried too.

23LOL, I know, JC. The comments section is much more alive for SOME reason.
But that’s a good thing!
Don’t worry, I’m going to get around to it probably no later than Friday. I’ve been super busy with lots of posting and life in general, but I will feature it on GEN!
Whoo, thanks, redhollywood.
