Storyline: Ongoing
Date: June 4th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Synopsis: Kick-Ass becomes an internet sensation. His crush hangs out with him cause she thinks he is gay and he meets a new superhero who takes the violence up a notch. Seriously, it’s some crazy #@!% !
You were wowed by the first two issues of this comic. But wait until you read issue three. Mark Millar (Civil War) and John Romita Jr (World War Hulk) only up the odds here and the pace is breathtaking. I read it weeks ago and I’m still having nightmares. Never have I seen such sickening violence sold to readers in the name of entertainment. If it wasn’t selling so well we’d have to stop publishing this monster. Follow Dave’s journey from zero to hero as he becomes a youtube celebrity. He sure kicked the ass of those drop-outs, didn’t he? Join us this issue where he inspires others to dress up and hurt people.
Opinion: With booby flashes, multiple expletives, and a nine year old girl who eviscerates and decapitates a man Millar has made it clear that this is an adults only party. Please leave the kids at home with the babysitter.
All those of consenting age may continue to the jump for the rest of the review.
WARNING!!: We will card anyone under the age of 35 for trying to read the rest of the review. Just kidding… or am I?!
Millar has taken comic violence to a whole new level. I’m surprised that parents everywhere haven’t started an uproar over this series. The question weighing on my mind is of Millar’s intent behind the over the top violence. Is he writing a social commentary on the twisted voyeuristic tendencies of mankind or is he simply having a damn good time getting us to spend 3 bucks a month on shock gore? Either way I’m satisfied.
There is only one problem with this series. Millar has an obvious pattern of dedicating 3/4 of the issue to story and character development and then tossing in a shocking fight scene on the last few pages. I would like to see the two better incorporated. If this trend continues KICK-ASS might not kick as much ass as it did in the beginning. It might just get old, but so far its been one crazy ride.
I personally think its damn cool to have a sword wielding maniacal nine year old superhero. Even better is to have Romita Jr. draw her looking innocent as if she is playing pretend decapitation in her backyard.
If you are weak of stomach or looking for a comic with deeper underlying tones, then KICK-ASS is not for you. On the other hand, if you love a gory shocking good time than steal $3 from your grandma’s purse, slap your little brother on the way out, and go pick up a copy of KICK-ASS #3 !!!!!!!

3Does a parent in the house count?
You know, isn’t the average comic book reader, like, 28? Shame on them. Hehe.

7I think the premise behind Kick-Ass is just amazing. I’m just not sure how satisfied I am with how it has been carried out so far.
I’m all for gore, when it is done correctly and not just shock value (i.e. Romero’s first 4 dead movies). I can’t help but feel this comic is gravitating towards just that, gore for gores sake.

8I agree about the gore thing. I mean, I haven’t read Kick Ass yet so I don’t know, but I’m talking in general. As long as there’s a purpose to it, I’m fine with gore. But if it’s just gore for gore’s sake like you said … I don’t like it.

10Me, too. I hope this series doesn’t go downhill—everyone’s been raving about how good it is, and descriptions of the comic itself I’ve heard/read have been like, “The ultimate comic book is finally here,” or something like that. (Which is doubtful, but I guess they have to advertise somehow.) How weird would it be if it ended up sucking, or not lasting many more issues?
