Storyline: Haunted
Date: May 28, 2008
Price: $3.99 US
Writer: Mark Miller
Artist: Tommy Lee Edwards
Synopsis: Before SECRET INVASION…before WORLD WAR HULK…before CIVIL WAR… The most powerful super-villains in the Marvel Universe gather their might to wreak havoc on the one place they’ve never before set foot—YOUR WORLD! As mankind’s enemies cut a swath of destruction with unprecedented ferocity and ruthlessness, the fate of the planet rests in the hands of one person: Toby, a 13-year-old boy who holds the key to uniting his comic-book idols, the Marvel Heroes! Superstars Mark Millar (CIVIL WAR, FANTASTIC FOUR) and Tommy Lee Edwards (BULLET POINTS, The Question) deliver a Marvel Event the likes of which you’ve never seen!
Opinion: This new comic is great! Well worth getting into a new series. The idea is fresh, original and the story keeps you interested. Set in 1985 the art does justice to that era of fashion, cars, and everyday American living. The reader is sucked into a story of a major super-hero battle. Only to be thrown into the mundane everyday world of 1985 without so much as an end or explanation of the battle.
Instead, the reader begins to follow the young life of Toby. We are first introduced to him when he is purchasing comics and his knowledge of comics is amazing for a 13-year-old. We learn that he is an only child of divorced parents, lives with his mom and her new swanky husband and is occasionally visited by his biological and broke father. He has a vivid imagination, one only more entertained by his comics, but that imagination is about to become real life.
Read more after the break, SPOILER WARNING!
Toby is picked up for a day with his father only to find his dad has no transportation. He and his dad instead walk through the town to an old abandoned house once owned by the parents of one of Toby’s dad’s friends. It has been recently purchased by a stranger to the town and they are curious to see who he is. We learn of Toby and his father’s honesty when they refuse to take first edition comics for free but then come to find out later that someone else was not so honest about it.
While his father visits with the new owner Tony sees a shadow figure in an upstairs window, a figure that looks surprisingly like one of his comic book villains! As the comic progresses Tony becomes more and more sure of what he saw in the window due to strange events happening around town. Tony decides to do some further investigating that night…
I’ve spoiled enough for you for now, but trust me when I say that what he finds in the woods that night is well worth the $3.99 for the comic! I can’t wait for the next issue to come out, it’s great to have a new story line and concept!
