Storyline: Secret Invasion Tie-In
Date: June 25th, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artists: Khoi Pham
Synopsis: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO—–? Rewinding the clock to Avengers Disassembled we reveal how one of the main players in SECRET INVASION was replaced by a Skrull and what the fallout has been. A major SECRET INVASION chapter is here! Oh, but you want to know exactly who we’re talking about right? Spoilers, dude!
Opinion: As we continue through the Secret Invasion, we watch heroes and heroines revel themselves as actually being shape-shifting aliens who have come to take over the earth. This creates another story in of itself as many fans are left wondering just how the real people were switched with their alien counterpart in the first place.

This concept is addressed in Iron Man’s Aveng…. Oops. I mean the Mighty Avengers. Hank Pym, AKA Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Yellow Jacket ect. has been taking a break from the superhero community to focus on his scientific endeavors. We watch as he eventually breaks up with his wife and hooks up with a bouncy and attractive college student.
Of course, every reader can tell from the get go that the girl is a skrull, but this doesn’t ruin the issue. Actually, it makes it better knowing her devious intent. We watch as she artfully weasels her way into Hank’s bed and divulges information from the man himself. Surely, this info will be used in the future to add validity to the imposter. Ah, the hubris of man.
While not being the best of Bendis’s numerous tie-ins, this is certainly in the upper half. It’s an interesting concept as it is fun to watch and see how the skrulls think and plot their way into the very heart of humanity.
What makes the Secret Invasion so interesting is that we get to see it from the other side. The skrulls have long been considered in the C list of Marvel villains but this new outing presents them as intelligent, organized and as being an actual threat. Nothing is as fun as watching a genius villain at work (Richard III anyone?) and while this isn’t the best issue, the approach makes it unique and worthwhile.

2I will agree that this is one of the better issues in the past few months

3Ok, I agree, it was a good issue. My problem with it? I was REALLY hoping that the imposters involved in the invasion would have been on Earth for a very long time. I was REALLY hoping this invasion would have far reaching and global consequences that had been in the works for decades. But, it turns out the Skrulls have only been planning this for the last few years. Bendis has done an adequate job showing us how they’ve achieved infiltration, I was just hoping it would go back farther and have more impact, instead we’re just being forced to by every book Marvel produces to get all the pieces of the story.

4Meh. The man started up NA a few years ago, I can’t fault him for showing the invasion as starting then because it really is his baby.

5yeah it would be hard for them to be showing that it has been taking place for decades

6See, I disagree. I think this “plan” of the Skrulls is the perfect explanation for all of the crazy s**t that happens in comics. How did Elektra come back from the dead? She’s a skrull. How has Bucky resurfaced? Skrull. The universe itself lends so much fodder for a story of that magnitude.

7Bucky a skrull? That would destroy one of the best archs comics to come out of Marvel in years.
You can’t simply round all these different writers, plots and stories under one umbrella and call it good story telling.

8yeah if marvel does that then I am out because that is just bull shit. I get really tired of marvel and DC killing off characters just to bring them right back and if marvel uses SI to bring back a lot of characters then we all have been hosed.

10I just read Mighty Avengers #15 and I think I found a hole that no one else has mentioned yet. In this issue, pre-Skrull Hank sees an internet headline about the breakout, but New Avengers #42 showed that the breakout occured when Pym had already been replaced. Something doesn’t fit here.
