After releasing issue after issue regaling us with trivial details and explanations we are finally given some answers that are actually worth knowing. Mighty Avengers #16 focuses on the very first skrull unveiled way back in New Avengers #31. Elektra was taken down by the New Avengers and subsequently shifted into a skrull, heralding the beginning of the Invasion.

There is very little dialogue in this one, which works in that it conveys the action rather well. But it does make this quick read become even quicker. Fortunately, that is just about the only problem that this issue contains. It starts off with a bang, as meditating Elektra is jumped by a series of super Skrulls and ends in the same fashion as we are shown how the Skrulls infiltrated and took control of the hand organization. Although we know from the get go that she is going to fall, it is still fun to watch Elektra’s mad martial arts skills at you as she dispatches several of the aliens.

It’s sad that Bendis’s tie-ins have been so hit or miss since the first couple. Don’t get me wrong, to fully grasp the Invasion we need to have some back-story giving us the information of how humanity was compromised and how these invaders have been manipulating the Marvel Universe in preparation of their attack.

However, I can’t help but continue to hope that he will soon begin focusing on the Invasion in real time. I want to read about Humanity’s resistance to the threat from space and not only about how the invasion occurred. It’s good information to know, but isn’t worthy of 457 tie-ins when there is so much more ground he could cover.
