Opinion: After a steady steam of perfect Secret Invasion tie-ins, Bendis has given us his first misstep in the most recent outing of those oh so new Avengers. Every recent issue of the New Avengers has served to fill in the gaps left by the Secret Invasion, answering questions and furthering the plot of Marvel’s company wide epic. However, issue #41 only adds to the confusion of the story.

It does this by hearkening back to the very first issues of the series. Now, there are many of us who have been following this book since issue one, but there are an equally large number of readers who have not. It is for this simple reason that I cannot recommend this issue to all but the most rabid of New Avengers fans.
To be fair, there is some advancement of the general Secret Invasion plot as the issue opens with the heroes and their 70’s counterparts duking it out while a dinosaur (yes, that is an actual dinosaur) gets busy scattering the lot. We watch as Spiderman meets up with the Savage lands native population who then begins divulging information to him on what actually happened, oh some 35 issues prior.

Sure, there is the hard core fan base which will love the explanation of just what the hell those shield agents were doing in the savage land way back in issue 6-7, but the vast majority simply won’t have any idea about what the hell is going on.

I love the idea that the Invasion has been an ongoing for several years now, with clues and hints left for us readers to find. However, basing an entire issue on an obscure plot point does not work and fails to make an interesting read.

To top it all off, we see the appearance of the 457th different Captain America to hit the Marvel Universe since the sentential of liberty was killed. Ugh. Can the writers simply let the man rest in peace?
