Opinion: The one eyed super spy is back, and is wielding what appears to be the biggest mother *&@&#!@ gun in history. Yes folks, Agent Nick Fury has returned to the Marvel universe just when he is needed most. With him he bring his Howling Commandos, a team of unknown heroes and heroines whom only Fury knows about and who have no possibility of having been replaced by Skrulls.

Nick Fury has been out of Marvel for what seems like an eternity and it is great to see him back in action. So great, in fact, that it makes this otherwise bland issue a fun read. It’s not that there is anything inherently wrong with the story; it’s just that nothing really happens. Fury and co mop up a few aliens in New York and we are given brief glimpses of what other characters are up too. That’s about it.

However, even being the worst Secret Invasion issue yet, this is still a fun read and absolutely necessary to further the story. They can’t all have huge unveilings or heroes being slaughtered by our new alien overlords because that would make it so that when such events do occur, they would seem insignificant and trivial.

What is done right here is the Skrulls are continuously being shown in a more serious manner. Watching Mr. Fantastic being tortured under what appears to be one of the most elaborate taffy pulling machines ever conceived helps push away the notion of silliness that our sly aliens have always carried with them in years past. One can’t help but feel like they are a threat, they could win. Okay. I know they won’t. But they could damn it!

No, I will concede this one to Bendis and just chalk it up to furthering the general plot. Besides, the last page makes it all worthwhile. For anyone who still isn’t convinced I give you these words: Shield & Hammer. If that doesn’t get you a little excited, you have no business calling yourself a comic nerd.
