Storyline: Old Man Logan part 1 of 8
Date: June 18th, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Steve Mcniven
Synopsis: Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of all. For 50 years, no one has heard hide nor hair from him…and in his place stands an old man called Logan. A man concerned only about his family. A man pushed to the brink by the HULK GANG. A man forced to help an old friend—the blind archer, HAWKEYE—to drive three thousand miles to secure his family’s safety. Get ready for the ride of your life, Logan.
Opinion: What an interesting book. Mark Millar once again weaves an interesting tale, disassembling a character we all know so well and presenting an altogether different person for us to get acquainted with. I’m not always a fan of Millar’s work, a lot of the time I have mixed feelings about his plots, but this one starts off on such a new and different foot, it’s hard not to be enthralled.
Read my full review after the jump.
It’s 50 years into the future, and we peer into yet another alternate timeline where the ‘no guts, no glory’ Wolverine we all know and love is instead replaced by a man who has given in to what he percieves is his fate and instead of fighting to the end, actually creates a family and tries to live in peace. What a stark contrast to who Wolverine actually is.
Maybe this is what makes this an interesting story, and maybe this makes the writer ignorant of the core of our character. We’ll only be able to see after the arch is through. One thing is for sure, there are some extremely interesting concepts being introduced in this issue. First is the ‘Hulk Gang’, a group of inbred rednecks with too much physical strength who run an area reminiscent of the old West. Yes, they are the progeny of the Hulk himself, who knows what to make of that. Then there’s a blind old acquaintance with an extremely interesting mode of transportation. Finally, there’s the map, which by itself is fodder for interesting story telling:
Old Man Logan is a story that will no doubt entertain, but Millar proves once again to be so out of touch with the main character and removed from the story. I know this is all probably a build-up to let readers experience the thrill of seeing Wolverine as the underdog and come back the way we all want and expect him to. The problem is that Millar banks too much on this alone, and the novelty of the effect of 50 years and the events therein may wear off before we reach the climax.
There’s a small chance we’ll be let down, but like I said, it’s probably going to be an interesting enough ride to make it worth it. I just hope Millar gets more in touch with the characters as the story progresses.

1Good review! seriously excellent. The reason I don’t read any Wolverine stories anymore is they all end the same way. Our gruff yet loveable short stack of furry fury always gets back in touch with his feral side and comes out on top. Alternate reality or not he always seems to be the same character, hell, even in “Powerless” he ended up being a brutal character. I agree though, sometimes it’s a good enough ride that it doesn’t matter.

2Thanks for the compliment michael. I never read Powerless, but it sounds like stereotypical Wolvie treatment.
You know what was a good wolvie read, though? The X-Force one-shot “Ain’t No Dog”. It was really good and reminiscent of the old one shots with a nice modern twist.
