Posted by JC as Christopher Yost, Clayton Crain, Craig Kyle, Marvel Comics, X-Force (v.2)

Storyline: Angels & Demons part 5 (of 6)
Date: July 16th, 2008
Price: $2.99 US
Writers: Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle
Artist: Clayton Crain
Synopsis: It began with one simple mission: Kill the Purifier leader Matthew Risman before he kills any more mutants. But everything went to hell…and now it gets worse. Wolfsbane’s decent continues. War rages between Risman and Bastion. The Choir rises. And if that weren’t enough… it’s X-FORCE VERSUS ARCHANGEL.
Opinion: Archangel’s back! And boy is he miffed about someone messing with his wings… AGAIN. Warren Worthington took a trip to wussy town in the last several years, in my opinion. This issue brings him back to a familiar form I know so well from my youth as an X-Men fan. I for one, am super amped about the pure badass that is Archangel.

This series has been fun so far, if a little confusing at points. It has helped that they’re doing recaps at the beginning of each issue, though. Unfortunately, this issue doesn’t really deliver as promised. It is awesome that Archangel is back, and it is cool when Wolverine tells his team to stand still and takes this threat very seriously.
But Warren’s in a rage, and in incredible pain fights through the X-Force to take flight, perhaps to get revenge. This issue focuses more on Risman’s narration and rationale for taking down Bastion. The narration throughout is his alone, recapping much of the story and explaining his perspective. It gets a bit droll, and the whole issue feels too much like a setup for the final chapter in X-Force #6.
This comic is by no means skippable, though. The bloody battle spread drawn beautifully and graphically by the talented Clayton Crain as well as the way Archangel is treated as an animal let loose is very well done, and the suspension at the end is part of the fun.
As a side note, some of you reading Uncanny X-Men #500 might be confused as to why Warren Worthington is Archangel in X-Force but Angel in Uncanny. This was explained by Joe Quesada in his cup ‘o Joe weekly interview that the events that take place in Uncanny are slightly behind the happenings in X-Force, as the Angel part of Warren Worthington plays a bit fo a role in Uncanny’s storyline so far. Res assured, Archangel should be back in the pages of Uncanny in no time.

1I’ve heard this series is pretty good so far. I’ll have to catch up on it.

2First of all, I hope that he stays the Archangel.
Secondly, I hope he joins X-force. The team needs a flyer…a vicious, destructive, rampaging, kickass, mutant flyer. More importantly, he’d be on a Wolverine led X-Force that’s all about being vicious, destructive, rampaging, kickass mutant…as well as understanding the influence of one of my favorite misunderstood badguy Mr. Nur.
Even more fitting, Archangel fits into the new Cyclops’ image of the X-men. I hope Marvel doesn’t turn them into another “policing” force like the Extreme X-men (although one of my favorite X-Men team) but keeps true to their forming: black ops/seek and destroy. (Only my boy, Warpath may have moral issues when needing to take a life.)
WWW III has shown as the Archangel, the experience, ability, the grit, and financial autonomy that fits perfect with X-Force…
The team could also use a psionic too…could Betsy be not too far behind? Her skill set included to this team would allow the team to remain functional just with her, WWW III, and Wolvie alone…

3…it’s not like Rachel Grey is even in the solar system to be asked to joined the team, since she has the background experience of exactly what this team (mutant hounds)…

4Ok so I’d like to get something going on this “New XFORCE Arc” especiallY! after reading #8 I cant pay enough “Omage” =/ to Yost & Oback!
The first story had me hooked but if you havent yet, you HAVE TO GET THESE BOOK’S!….what I will say next is sort of a SPOILER so please dont read if you dont want to…
FIRST the original TEAM…PERFECT
LOGAN, LAURA & “Jimmy” (Warpath) than you got RAHNE ehh so-so but still an AWESOME team w/CYK calling the shots…
Than when ARCHangel came back…throe in ELIXIR cause theres got to be a healer! AWESOME!
Great villains and great ARTWORK…even the story’s been GREAT!!
NOW in #8 we get to see some XFORCE oldy but goody(s)…DOMINO! better than I’ve ever seen her DRAWN BTW…and now the possibilities in the preview pic for #9….it’s be SO GREAT to see Shatterstar again…of cource in the BLK/SILVER XFORCE fatigues….
MAYBE even some DEADPOOL action in the X-FORCE ranks!!! ???

7LOL, TOTALLY DAKEN could def be an asset, did you just read #8 AMAZING!

….S’gonna be good, and how could CYK not use him! ?

8Daken doesn’t need to be on this team. Sorry to disagree on that. And truth be told, Daken’s only beaten Wolvie because of Wolvie holding back. Plus, I don’t think he can beat Laura. Just don’t see that happening because she IS Wolvie (not his child) and she WOULDN’T hold back. Daken can be Laura’s Sabertooth instead of that one chick who is more like Laura’s Cyber.
Elixir is cool, but I want to see Elixer’s darkside come out; not just him going around healing everyone that already have some type of healing factor.
Rahne can go, but she NEEDS to be under Wolvie’s guidance…LOOONG overdue.
As to Dom (just love that woman) and Shatterstar, I’m kinda hesistant on. I want this to be Cyclops/Wolvie’s X-Force not the old X-Force under Wolvie’s field leadership. You already have Warpath and Rahne.
As to WWW III transformation, I don’t get the process but I understand the basis of the Archangel’s return. Makes me wonder if the change is transdimensional…we know that Angel and Nightcrawler are polar opposite mutant types…maybe the Archangel is closer to the Nightcrawler-type due to the Apoc-strain that makes Archangel possible…?

9DAKEN WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THE TEAM. HE’D FIT IN HERE WAAAY BETTER THAN HE WOULD IN A REGULAR X-TEAM.
AS LONG AS SHATTERSTAR DOESN’T MAKE “MOVE” ON HIM (LOL LOL LOL), IT SHOULD BE A GOOD TEAM.
EVEN BISHOP WOULD BE GOOD ON THIS TEAM, BUT THEIR CAN’T BE MORE THAN ONE LEADER TO A TEAM AND DOMINO MAKES A GREAT SECOND IN COMMAND TO WOLVERINE.
