Storyline: Legacy
Date: June 18th, 2008
Price: $2.99
Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Scot Eaton
Synopsis: Xavier traces his history and the history of the X-Men to the core. What he finds will shock you. And what do Rogue, Gambit and Sebastian Shaw have to do with it?
Opinion: Mike Carey is putting on one hell of a show, delving back into the Gambit/Mr. Sinister topic with Xavier being at the center of the story. While the amnesia factor is a bit tired, I can’t help but overlook a lot of stuff simply because Gambit’s back! This story so far has been a lot of fun and the plot revealed in this issue is quite a creative one.
Read my full review after the jump.
In this issue, the action keeps going when Sebastian Shaw shows up and he and Gambit fight their way into the abandoned facility with an uncertain truce to destroy Mr. Sinister once and for all. While all of this is going on, we learn about Dr. Mueller, a former colleague of Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister) who wants Charles Xavier dead so she can assume the powers of Mr. Sinister.
We learn of a device Sinister created that allows him to be “reborn” into the body of four particular people. When push comes to shove and the story heats up, Xavier must make a choice that may have a very serious impact on this character, especially amongst the X-Men. You’ll have to read it to find out what he chose!
The art is great, but a little detail heavy. I do have a bit of a gripe about the way the meeting between Shaw and Gambit was composed, but I think that’s just fanboyism there. Gambit’s personality needs to be a little less… stupid. Additionally, idle threats just don’t seem to be his style, in my opinion.
Oh yeah, and Gambit gets shot, or grazed on the right shoulder, but in the following page he is holding his left shoulder lol.
Anyway, all that fanboyism aside, X-Men is the best it has been in years, in my opinon. This is a great time to get into the titles, especially if you’re a former reader who got lost along the way.

1man they really slipped up with the gun shot wound. Marvel needs to be more careful with that.

2You know, I have let all of my interest in x-titles wane in the past few years. They convoluted the storyline to the point where I never knew what was going on and there were 5 million Mutants. House of M took it down to 198 and I STILL didn’t know what was going on despite reading every x-title. Then I read The End, got even MORE confused and decided that I was just done with X-men. I only read Astonishing now.
After reading your review i’m starting to realize that I made the right decision, Not that the title sounds bad, or the story too confusing, just that I’m over it. I don’t care about Xavier, or Sinister any more. Thanks for the review!

3Gambit rocks! I mean, come on. The man has the mysterious ability to transfer bullet wounds to different locations. That could be very handy.
