Are you guys ready for this? It’s a bit of a stretch but it’s the only piece of information that might be relevant to the setup and plot of 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. This post is merely speculative, and it doesn’t help that the source information has been changed, but we couldn’t rightly call ourselves nerds if we didn’t see at least some significance in this.
Ok, so as of yesterday, the WHOIS information for http://www.risoefcobra.com had some potentially spoilery information hidden within it. The information has since been changed, and I can only assume it is because some sites have picked up on it and actually published the email address listed in the WHOIS, which most likely was the reason this information was pulled down.
Click through the jump to see all of the little nuggets that were dropped and see it’s just crazy talk or if something is really to be found here…
1.) The name listed as the owner of the domain was Albert Pike, a confederate military officer who was a Sovereign Grand Commander in the fraternal order of Freemasons. He was considered to be eminent and influential, establishing the many rituals of the order. Here is the juicy part: there is speculation that Albert Pike wrote a letter to Giuseppe Mazzini in 1871 regarding a conspiracy involving three world wars that were planned in an attempt to take over the world. This just screams Cobra!
2.) The physical address that was listed as the owner’s is 101 Callahan Drive, in Alexandria, Virginia. This address doesn’t even exist, but instead faces the George Washington National Masonic Monument in DC!
3.) Inside the contact information, there was a latin quote: “In Hoc Signo Vinces.” Which translates as “in this [sign] you will conquer”. Gee, I wonder how this could be connected to Cobra?
4.) The email address listed as the WHOIS contact had the name John Q. Pringle. Pringle (1865-1925) was a Scottish artist who was famous for his work with a group of artists and architects known as the Glasgow Boys. This may not be the John Q. Pringle that the email address means, but perhaps it’s a Destro connection, considering Destro is Scottish.
So, there you have it. I was trying to hunt down a screenshot of this info before the changeover but I have been unsuccessful. Again, if you go to WHOIS right now, the information was changed yesterday.
There is no proof this is tied to the plot, but if it is, it sounds like they might be trying to root the Cobra origins and motivations into real-life American history and possibly mix it all in with DaVinci-code-type clues in paintings? If so, it sounds like a bit of DaVinci Code, National Treasure and a military action flick combination that would be awesome.

What do you think? Is this stretching things a bit? Too far fetched? Seems like too many coincidences to me!

2I can tell you one thing, the plot premises SOUND good, but seeing some of the sneak pics posted on this site and others, I don’t think it will matter one iota how great the plot is. The costuming looks stupid! The body armor is over the top, SnakeEyes looks silly, Stormshadow looks goofy. Unless they are TRYING to put forth an air of campy fun, and this is going to be part comedy part action, I think they should scrap it and start over. Honestly, as silly as it seems, I would rather see the Joes in their traditional outfits.
