Happy Monday folks, and welcome to our weekly feature, Monday Movie Mayhem! Where we cover movie and TV nerd-related news for all the ComicNerd.com readers out there!

Unfortunately folks, this is the very last installment of “Monday Movie Mayhem!”, it’s just not proving to be very popular and I think it might be better to just post movie news as it comes rather than giving you ‘old news’ every Monday morning.  So, for this last installment, let me bring to you the normal format one more time.  Look out for in-depth movie reviews just like the one we did for The Incredible Hulk on ComicNerd as well!

This week we have a lot of trailers, so prepare a cup of coffee and get ready to be teased!  First up is the synopsis of the X-Men Origins: Magneto film, based on the actual screenplay itself.   We have the first trailer for The Day The Earth Stood Still remake, starring Keanu Reeves.  Another new trailer for The X-Files: I Want to Believe sequel, set to release later this month.  There is a trailer as well for The Mutant Chronicles, set to release sometime this year and starring Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman.  I’m still not sure how I feel about that one.  A relatively uninteresting promo pic from the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie has been released.  We have some news about who’s going to be in Smallville season 8.  Finally, we have some news about a film based on The Goon comic series.

X-Men Origins: Magneto

There has been some reports on the interwebs about the synopsis of the proposed Magneto origins flick, planned to begin after the Wolverine movie.  Here is the reported screenplay breakdown:

Magneto’s real name is Erik Lehnsherr. He’s a Jew and a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and there are several ideas at the core of the script: the Nazis’ wartime activities to create a master race; the Holocaust and its lasting impact (on Lehnsherr in particular); the hunt for war criminals who have escaped justice; and also a note of optimism and reconciliation from Professor Charles Xavier with his own quest to learn from the mistakes of the past and build hope from the ruins of horror.

Here we find out about Magneto’s early friendship with Xavier (as indicated at the start of X-Men: The Last Stand) and how the seeds are sown for a bleak future when mutants will be persecuted as much as those other minorities sent to the death-camps.

The script begins and ends with a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, when leaders and survivors gathered in Krakow, Poland, to remember the atrocities committed by the Third Reich. Erik Lehnsherr is present at the ceremony; he sees the metal gate he crumpled as a 14-year-old boy, when his powers emerged in the painful moment his parents were herded to the gas chamber (as seen in the opening scene of the first X-Men movie). We then flash back to his lifestory.

We see Erik experimented on and tortured in the camps by a Nazi called Dr Kleinmein who wants to create a master race of supermen and is especially interested in unlocking the key to human potential in those such as Erik who have extraordinary capabilties.

After the war, Erik builds a new life in the Ukraine but personal tragedy drives him on a journey to track down the Nazis such as Kleinmein who have escaped prosecution. The story takes us to Paris, Argentina, Israel - where he meets Professor Xavier - and then the USA, where he closes in on Kleinmein and his inhuman research to exploit mutant DNA. At first Erik tries to bring Nazis to justice through official channels but that fails and he joins forces with a CIA agent called Owen Graves, but he soon finds he has to go it alone and use unconventional methods to get justice and vengeance.

The story closes with Xavier offering some hope for the future - and then takes us back to that Auschwitz liberation anniversary event where Senator Kelly (seen in the first two X-Men movies) warns of mutants as the next threat after the Nazis, thus setting the stage for the three X-Men movies we have already seen.

Here’s the very first teaser trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still, a remake of the 1951 classic starring  Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, and John Cleese and set to release on December 12th.

The Mutant Chronicles

Earth’s natural resources have been exhausted by mankind and battle rages between the soldiers of four leading Corporations: the Capitol, Bauhaus, Mishima and Imperial.

Mitch Hunter and Nathan Rooker, battle hardened Capitol soldiers, fight a desperate battle against a Bauhaus advance. When an errant shell destroys an ancient stone seal, they find themselves facing a new enemy: hideous necrmutants, with boneblades that grow from their arms. Mithc barely manages to escape. Nathan does not.

The mutants multiply by millions and they destroy all before them. The Corporations’ leader, Constantine, is about to abandon the planet and leave countless innocents to their desperate fate, when he is approached by Brother Samuel, leader of the Brotherhood, and ancient monastic order

Samuel is keep of the Chronicles, a book that prophesies both the rise of the Mutants, and the ‘Deliverer’ that will destroy them. Samuel believes he is that Deliverer destined to journey deep into the earth and destroy the source of the mutant scourge.

He manages to recruit Mitch, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers: Steiner, honor bound Bauhaus officer; sword wielding Severian; street fighter El Jesus; fearless beauty Duval; and stoic warrior Juba.

“Mutant Chronicle” follows Mitch and Samuel’s mission to venture into the very heart of the darkness in an attempt to save the planet from marauding hordes of deathless mutants.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Yay, wolvie in a wife beater with claws.  BOO.  Show me some Deadpool or Gambit promo pics, then you’ll get me amped.

Smallville

The JLA movie may just be a pipe dream, but it appears Smallville is doing its best to bring some of these characters to life.

The season opener (titled “Odyssey”) will feature Hartley’s Green Arrow along with returning guest heroes the Black Canary (Alaina Huffman) and Aquaman (Alan Ritchson) as they come to Clark’s rescue after he was left for dead by Lex in Arctic, last season’s finale episode. Additionally, the Martian Manhunter (Phil Morris) will return for the episode.

The recurring theme for season eight of Smallville will be ‘double identities’, according to new showrunner Kelly Souders. “It’s about the Superman identity emerging as Clark Kent tries to maintain a normal life - or the appearance of a normal life.” As a part of this theme, the Clark and Lois working relationship will begin as Clark takes a job at the Daily Planet, working across from Lois. “The camaraderie as they work side-by-side that everyone loves from the DC Comics and all the Superman lore is going to come to fruition this year,” Souders says. “The two of them are thrown together in some unfortunate situations for Clark. She becomes a little bit of an obstacle to him saving the world, when he’s on a deadline.”

Souders, who is running the show along with Brian Peterson, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, says that the show should maintain a similar tone to that established by Al Gough and Miles Millar, who left the show with the conclusion of the seventh season. All four are long time producers on the show, and according to Souders “Luckily [Al and Miles'] voices are still talking to us in our heads as we’re breaking stories. Their visions come to us all the time, so I think they did a great job of preparing us for this day.”

The Goon

David Fincher, quite possibly one of the best directors working today is producing a CGI-animated adaptation of Dark horse’s The Goon for the big screen.  The movie will be written by Goon creator Eric Powell.
