Synopsis: For 42 issues readers of New Avengers have wondered, who caused the breakout in New Avengers #1 and why? And how was this the real start of the SECRET INVASION? Find out right here!

Opinion: Well here we go again loyal readers and fellow comic nerds. It doesn’t appear that my lambasting of the issue 41 had much affect on Mr. Bendis, as he seemed fit to go ahead and give us the same thing he did last time.

Read the full review after the jump.

Whereas issue 41 went back and expounded upon issues 6-7 of New Avengers, issue 42 goes all the way back to issue 1. Issue 1?! It that really necessary? Couldn’t he have just thrown in a couple of quick anecdotes to quell those readers who have been devoured every issue these past 3 ½ years? It appears that no, he can’t.

What he have is an entire issue devoured to a select few, answering their question sand making them go “Ahhh” while the rest of us either have to pick up some trade paperbacks or just quit buying New Avengers until all this skrull mess is over with.

It’s not like this is a bad issue when put into context with #1 and the forming of New Avengers. After I brushed up on the history of the team I was ready to dive right in. But I believe that is a tremendous hindrance to the story.

If it is necessary for a fan to have to have very precise knowledge about a particular story arch so many years ago that he can’t understand the story, then why should he continue to lay down his hard earned 3/4ths of a gallon of gas?  The requirement of encyclopedic knowledge of comic books keeps many a new reader from joining our ranks and let’s face it folks, our ranks ain’t what they used to be.

Maybe I am being too harsh. We do learn about a New Avenger who has been a skrull since the get go, and we see how the skrulls have been manipulating events in the Marvel Universe for a very long time. All this is cool and all but it seems rather, unnecessary. Instead of focusing on the past can we please turn our attention to the present? An armada of alien invaders has hit the planet with everything they’ve got. Wouldn’t focusing on this make for a better, more exciting read? Wouldn’t it?
