Synopsis: Super heroes running a female fight club? Unbelievable perhaps, but it’s a tale of depravity that will send shockwaves across the globe once the sordid details appear on a podcast uploaded by the TRUE BELIEVERS! Who are these counter-culture subversives with strange powers and abilities who have proclaimed themselves ‘warriors of the information age’? The True Believers not only speak truth to power, they wield it like a weapon using it to root out lies and deception, cover-ups and conspiracies wherever they find them. Whether it’s S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Illuminati, HYDRA or Weapon X, the CIA or the CSA, no target is too big and no one is off-limits—including a wary superhuman community with plenty of its own secrets to hide!
Opinion: True Believers issue #1 looks to be a very promising story line. If you read my reviews you’ll know I’m a big fan of mysteries and this new story line is all about solving crimes. Of course it wouldn’t be a comic if super heroes didn’t solve those crimes but that’s what makes this story so interesting!
Read my full review after the jump.
The issue starts with the superhero group infiltrating an illegal fight night hosted by disguised prominent figures in the community. You are introduced to our main heroine who can shape-shift into something that seems to be able to channel heat, to the point of liquidity and her band of tech support. We’ll learn more about them towards to end of the issue.
The really cool part of the story line is our heroines narration of the events as she sees them, I know i the past that I’m not really a big fan of narration, especially if it’s used as a substitute for the story but this is clever, witty, and allows the ready to get to know the character a bit better, nor does it distract from the story in any way.
The plot line takes a twist as you learn that, though this bunch of super hero detectives is good at what they do, they are not accepted in the world of super heroes or the world of detectives (i.e. police, FBI, CIA etc…) Not only do they embarrass both worlds with their intelligent work, they post the end results on the internet. You can imagine what kind of response the general public had to the prominent figures being arrested for holding illegal fights!
Of course to protect their cover and due to the fact they are getting ready to discredit Reed Richards of the fantastic four our heroine infiltrates S.H.E.I.L.D. as an “expert” on this new group so she can feed them misinformation and help the “investigation” go smoothly. The reader learns that she is the only one of the group with any real super powers, the other three are just really smart and talented. I believe this helps with their credibility as a team. The next issue will tell us the dirt these new super heroes have on Reed Richards, we’ll just have to wait until next month to find out. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait!
