Welcome to Variant Watch where each week I’ll be discussing the new hot variant covers of the week.  As all comic collector’s know, each week on Wednesday Comic book Santa Claus flies around to every comic shop in the world delivering that week’s new comics and there is much celebration.

[Editor's note:  Weekly Variant Watch was postponed last week due to the late comic shipping.   Because we only post M-F, this column was not completed until the end of the week, so I chose to post it now.  Normally you would see this post every Thursday]

Now the avid collectors also know that with each shipment of new comics comes a select few variant covers of regular issues.  Why are they special you ask?  No, not because they cost two-to-fifty times that of the regular issues.  Variants are rare and “rare” is a word that comic collectors both love and hate.  When you have a “rare” book you love it.  When you are looking at “rare” books on Ebay and questioning your station in life because you can’t even picture a time when you’ll be able to drop $500.00 on a comic book, “rare” can be an awful term.

Variant Watch Is Go! (insert kung fu and squealing tire sound effects) That’s right kids! Variant watch is back to once again inform you, the loyal and no doubt attractive reader, of the hot variant comics of the week! Each week Variant Watch takes hard look at all the overpriced variant books hitting the stands and cuts through the hype to help you, the sexy-sexy reader, make an informed variant purchase that will both invigorate you’re comic collection and make you a better person.

*Note: currently there is no real evidence to support the fact that buying variant comics will improve any facet of your life. However, there is an indescribable pleasure that a collector feels when seeing a comic that he or she purchased sky-rocket in value mere months after said purchase. This is where Variant Watch comes in…

This Thursday’s Variant of the Week:

Secret Invasion #4 Variant Cover

Secret Invasion #4 1-in-50 Variant Cover by Leninl Francis Yu.

This is one of the best looking Marvel variants I’ve seen in quite some time and I’m predicting it disappears from shelves very quickly. Retailers received one of these Yu variants for every 50 issues they ordered of the regular cover. Most retailers should be selling this one for $25-$30, anymore and I would find a different comic shop. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Nick Fury’s return to the Marvel U than an awesome Lenil Yu cover.

This Thursday’s Stinker Variant of the Week:

JSA #17 Variant Cover

JSA #17 1:10 Variant cover by Dale Eaglesham.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record here but is anyone thinking of buying the Eaglesahm variant of this book. NO! Of course they’re not! Why would anyone pay $5-$10 for the variant cover of JSA #17 when they can get the regular cover by, arguably the greatest superhero comic painter of our time, Alex Ross for $2.99. I don’t get it DC. If there’s any logic behind this I’d love to hear it. Don’t get me wrong. I love Dale Eaglesham but when choosing between him or Alex Ross there is no contest. If you look at the pricing of the three series that Alex Ross has been doing covers for recently, Batman, JSA and Superman, not one of the variant covers by the regular series artist is selling for more than regular cover price. Coincidence? I think not!

That’s all for variant watch this week. Honorable mention should go to the 1-in-20 Tim Sale wraparound cover of Captain America: White #0 which I almost wrote up as the stinker of the week thanks to Marvel.com misrepresenting which cover was the variant. As it turns out the wraparound cover is quite impressive and I find myself clamoring for one as you read this.

See you next week true believers!
